Last 5 years:

Mathieu: 17 interceptions, 311 tackles, 5 fumble recoveries, 7 sacks, 19 TFL, 2 Pro Bowls (2020, 2021), 2 AP All Pros (2019, 2020)

Williams: 15 interceptions, 320 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 0 Pro Bowls

Williams is 4 years younger which is why he got the larger contract.

Yeah. Hot take that will get me downvoted, but I think we still downgraded overall at the position pretty heavily: Mathieu & Maye vs Williams and Jenkins. Understandably, though, since Mickey has been pretty forthcoming about their desire to clean up the cap.

Have to hope that TM's intangibles make up some of the difference.

He also plays a more valuable position and is better now.

Mathieu before his ACL surgery was better than Williams is now, but that was a long time ago.

I'm curious how CGJ and our 2nd round pick are impacted.

I love Mathieu, but this is above what I think he's worth at this stage of his career. Hopefully, I'm wrong

Remember when Marcus Williams ran side by side with the offensive player all the way to the end zone. I’m going to miss that guy.

MW43 ---> Marcus Maye
Malcolm Jenkins ---> TM7

Reverse Jenkins and TM7. PFF is a sham but TM7 has had a better score the last 3 years I'm pretty sure. For sure last year. Both are still good players. Difference being TM7 was a little bit younger. But he should provide basically what Jenkins did. Maye and PJ will be FS

Mathieu is a clutch player that makes plays in critical moments. Williams is a very talented player that has lapses in critical moments.

I think back to the Giants game last year and a fumble that occurred in the end zone. Williams was in perfect position to recover the fumble but didn't and it resulted in a Giants TD.

Tyrann mathieu and Malcolm Jenkins are the exact same player except mathieu is 4 years younger. It’s an upgrade no matter how you slice it. Their stats were the exact same last year except badger had more pics because he’s a playmaker

I'm not saying which ones are better. I'm saying saints are going from this one to that one as per safety position. That's all.

Only $18 mil guaranteed? I’ll take that deal all day. We have the cap room this year that if we really wanted to we could front load his deal and pay $11 million this year so he’d only have $7 mil left guaranteed. Usually the Saints backload contracts but this one may be the exception.

Yeah, because every player is judged off of one play. Mathieu is still good, but if you take your LSU homer glasses off, he is not close to Williams and he is 30 years old. Williams was paid accordingly. TM is not the player he once was, but is still a good player. Glad to have him.

Well yeah because MW is a very specific type of safety. He excels in single high. He's a master of it. But he wasn't a downhill guy and wasn't a one-on-one coverage guy. Wasn't a blitzer. That kind of thing.

TM7 kind of does it all. Jack of all trades, but master of none kind of deal. He was flexible in KC. They had him up high, they had him in two-safety looks, had him in the slot, had him blitzing. He did a variety of different things. You know who else did that? Malcolm Jenkins.

So no, he's not as good as Marcus Williams and isn't as young. But it's not the right player comp. He's a valuable piece to add to our defense because he basically does everything Jenkins did for us...but better. He's not leaps and bounds better than Jenkins but he is an upgrade.

Mathieu plays a less valuable position (box-nickel), has already exited his prime, wasn't that good last year, and will decline a great deal every year.

I’m not sure he’ll decline “a great deal” every year, but I understand where you’re coming from. And you’re an analytical guy, so you’re gonna compare their individual production. Which is valid. But—and this is impossible to quantify—but TM is more valuable than his simple quantifiable production. His being on the field is gonna make everyone better, a sum is greater than the whole of its parts kinda guy. And I think that extends to the whole team as well, not just the defense.

This team doesn’t have a whole lot of guys that have played in big NFL games anymore, and he’s a Super Bowl champion that everybody can look to. So just comparing the individual safeties we lost to the ones we gained, on paper may look like we downgraded. But assuming they stay healthy, I think the defense and the entire team is better with these 2.

Eh. I mean, by all measures he wasn't an All Pro last year but he was still pretty damn solid for them according to PFF. Better than Jenkins. People also said Jenkins was going to decline in his two years here once we got him since he was 32 at the time we signed him. And he was pretty damn solid for us.

TM7 didn't play in the divisional round against Buffalo and the Chiefs got torched by the Bills. They were much better defensively against Cincy in the AFCCG. They still lost, but had plenty of chances to win thanks to the D.

ETA: But to your credit, SFP, he does play a less valuable position than Williams. We will miss Williams a lot this year. How much will be dependent on Maye and PJ Williams, not as much of MW's role will be laid on Mathieu's shoulders. He's going to be asked to basically do what Jenkins did for us but at a higher level. The only bad thing is we gave Maye a lot of money for the next 2-3 years. I hope he pans out.

cgj - ss
tm7 - nickel
maye - fs

lot of down/distance circumstance in all 3 of those positions. lot of interchange with that group.

I wasn't a fan of what we paid Jenkins in his 2nd tour. Mathieu is much better than him.
