Mathieu is a clutch player that makes plays in critical moments. Williams is a very talented player that has lapses in critical moments.

He will make everyone around him better. No one will slack on defense.

I figured he would get right around 18 mil guaranteed. It's a fair contract.

Tyrann mathieu and Malcolm Jenkins are the exact same player except mathieu is 4 years younger

No.

Jenkins was bigger and stronger. His best attribute was being able to match up on quality TEs and even then he was at a big disadvantage due to size.

And they can deny it all they want, but Taylor is gonna wind up playing some safety before he’s done. Whether that’s this year or not, not sure. It could depend on injuries.

Right player at the right time. Yes, he is 30 & lost a step, but he brings the leadership both on & off the field. He will have our DB in the right position for the play. He is so football smart, way ahead of Williams. And of course he is a fan favorite that will sell a lot of Jerseys :-) A pretty good deal for $ 18 guaranteed imo.

Only question is will Taysom give up his #7.

I wasn't a fan of what we paid Jenkins in his 2nd tour. Mathieu is much better than him.

I liked the addition. Didn’t like how much it cost us. Jenkins really raked us over just so CSP could right a past wrong. Plus CSP had such a hard on for Jenkins ever since he left.

Having said that, he had a rough go of it in 2020 until the halfway point of the season. After that, he cleaned his shite up and played well until he retired. He did a lot of things for us. Covered TE’s well outside of Waller, blitzed effectively, solid communicator in the back end. He just didn’t make many splash plays, which Mathieu will, which is why I don’t mind the contract. We’re basically getting a younger Jenkins, who can do everything he did, but also change a game with a forced fumble or an INT. As good as Jenkins was, and the defense as a whole, he never really gave us that. It’s a missing component of our already top 10 defense.

We were outside the top 10 in forced turnovers in 2021. It’s not a sustainable stat by any means, but adding a player that caused 6 turnovers last year in a down year vs. someone who had two (Jenkins had 1 pick and 1 forced fumble) is something I can get behind. The addition of Mathieu, and a healthy year from Cam, Payton Turner and Davenport, with some sack-fumbles tossed in, should help us break through the top 10 in turnovers and give our offense some breathing room, esp if we miss out on Kamara for 6-8 games.

Not even close TM7 way better player. Any leader that elevates everyone around him, does his job, always making game changing plays is better. Did Williams do any of tha5 or just did his job.
Plus we ge5 to spend 3-5 million on another player cause TM7 is cheaper. Saints win, fans win, easy choice.

Mathieu can cover TEs but he’s much, much better on WRs. I imagine Ceedy will play a little more SS and tail the truly elite TEs more this year since he’s bigger and stronger. I imagine they’ll switch it up a lot since both Ceedy and Mathieu can cover both. But ideally, Mathieu will roam and make plays and cover the slot at times and the TE sometimes while Ceedy is mostly in the slot and then sometimes covering TE’s. They’ll throw multiple looks at guys if they’re worried about them. I’m sure DA and Kris Richard will find the optimal looks. But if Ceedy can lock up a guy like Godwin, he’ll be just fine letting Mathieu do it while he covers Gronk or Pitts or whoever

Hell, as good as Werner and Davis are, they might be the one tailing TE’s in coverage. Outside of Pitts, Waller and Kittle, there aren’t any other TEs that outclass them. They can hang with most of the TEs in the league. Just not the truly elite.

The only thing that matters is production for the money. These moves at safety make sense from that perspective. Losing Jenkins was happening either way, so let’s assume Maye was coming even if we resigned MW.

We are slightly less capable, but way cheaper overall and deeper. Still a top secondary in the league. Now we just need a succession plan for TM7. Maybe that’s Taylor.

Mathieu has covered tight ends well from what I have seen.

How is Jenkins faster?

I saw where one analyst said he liked the move because the Saints went from a true free and true strong safety, to two flex guys - which might give DA/RN/LR more flexibility in the secondary. We'll see.
