Deal is now in place: Saints and Tyrann Mathieu officially reached agreement on a three-year, $33 million contract, including $18 million fully guaranteed, per sources. Language still needs to be finalized and the deal signed. But Mathieu is returning home to New Orleans.

Marcus Williams got 5/70

I think we made the right decision.

Williams is much younger and much better though. The contract for Mathieu is more than I thought. We will see how it is structured. May have an inflated 3rd year.

I'd say
MW43 ---> Marcus Maye
Malcolm Jenkins ---> TM7

I'll take the hometown discount and Jarvis Landry.

That’s a good deal for a pro bowler that’s only just turning 30. We’re at the very least going to get the last of his good years.

Yeah, because every player is judged off of one play. Mathieu is still good, but if you take your LSU homer glasses off, he is not close to Williams and he is 30 years old. Williams was paid accordingly. TM is not the player he once was, but is still a good player. Glad to have him.

Any fan that thinks a bad play as a rookie is more important than the 100s of good plays he made probably doesn’t really know football. Both are great football players. Marcus Williams got what his market value was. He’s an elite safety. Mathieu has been elite as well. He’s older though so his market value is going to be lower. That’s just how it works. For the cap space the saints had Mathieu makes more sense.

I think the best thing he brings to the table is the onfield leadership..

M Williams was never going to bring that...

Mathieu was 1st team All-Pro in 2019 and 2020, and is just now about to turn 30. He’s definitely got a few good quality years left in him. Psychologically, you have to imagine playing in front of his hometown team will only motivate him to get back to the levels “he once was” which was less than 2 years ago.

Yeah Mathieu is a great leader. Which is something Malcolm Jenkins was as well. I think this team is loaded with leaders on defense. Mathieu is going to give us continued elite play at the position.

As an LSU fan I’m stoked about the signing because he was one of the best players to ever play for LSU.

Williams plays a more valuable/expensive position (deep/cover safety) and is entering his prime.

Mathieu plays a less valuable position (box-nickel), has already exited his prime, wasn't that good last year, and will decline a great deal every year.

I'm happy we got him, but it's nowhere near a like:like comparison.
