Would you go on a 14 day "church tour" of Malta, Sicily and Italy?

My wife's church has some last minute openings on a 14 day tour in late May from NOLA to Malta, Sicily and on to Rome that is planned and sponsored by a well know local priest and a experienced tour operator out of NY.

I have not been to Italy and really want to go sooner than later.

Everything is planned and scheduled except for a few dinners and there seems to be 4-5 days/afternoons of down time from visiting holy sites to do whatever we would want to. (Including an train option to Florence or Venice for those that have been to Rome already etc..)

Thanks in advance on advice for this as a option to see Italy.

Would this be an easy and effective way to see Italy for the first time?

Ain't spending 25K to have a bad time. My wife now want to bring the daughter and at 8K a ticket I can do our own less hectic trip.

Thanks!!!

I wouldn't want to go with a group like that, because everything goes so slowly, as you are always waiting on someone who's still in the bathroom, etc. And you don't get to spend as much time talking with locals, because you spend your time talking to people in your group.

It's the kind of trip I'd only do if I really liked the people in the group and really wanted to get to know them better and become better friends with them. Because that's what this kind of trip is ultimately about.

My sister has done a couple of these through a friends church and enjoyed them very much.

WTF? You can hit Jerusalem and Rome for far less than that in business class for the same stretch. Turkish, and my Israeli tour guides know guides wherever you're going. Pay in cash, but some drinks at the end of the day, deal done.

Is there anyone here that believes that Malta, Sicily and Rome are worth 14 days? The quoted cost and duration seems ludicrous.

I am not a fan of group trips. I enjoy going somewhere with a rough travel itinerary and being able to change it on the fly if I want to go somewhere else or do something else. Some people enjoy them, though

Yeah I got the responses I thought I would. The only reason this came up because a decision to commit has to be made this week and going to holy sites is the only way I can get the wife onboard oversees in a short time frame.

I am going to hold back and figure I can get 2 trips for the same costs if I plan it myself.

That being said, I need a trip someone I haven't been in mid May!!!

My mom is in her 80s and loves these trips. I would expect this trip would be one she would love too. It is definitely not for me.

Organized trips sound too much like an elementary field trip. I don't want to be roped in for two weeks.

The destinations sound great though.

Went on a 10 day Pilgrimage to Italy with our diocese at the beginning of the year. Booked through holytravels.org out of Lafayette as this is their speciality.
100% the best experience of a lifetime.
We were on a timeframe and never had to wait on anyone. One day a few overslept and they simply had to take a taxi to catch up with us.
All transportation was handled for you.
All tours were scheduled and we never had to wait in a line.
A very spiritual experience that we plan to do again.

No way in hell am I going to spend that much money to vacation with a bunch of people that will judge me on how I enjoy myself and relax on my vacation.

That's too many people to try to keep happy. Everyone will be miserable. Everyone will blame everyone else for their misery. But miraculously, everyone will gush about how wonderful the trip was once they get home.

My main issue with trips like this is the mark-up. Today, with all the free resources online, you can plan the same trip for half the cost with 10-15 total hours of planning over a few months. And travel apps and cell phones make navigating in real time in foreign countries relatively easy.

Good lord! This sounds like a scam. We went to Italy (2 of us) last year for 8 days for $4k, and that includes everything we bought while we were there

For me, It would depend on the church and what the parishioners are like. Would never do it with Baptists, Church of Christ, Pentecostals, etc.

It’s not a scam, just the going rate for these type of tours. I use another tour company out of Chicago for my pilgrimages. It’s all up to individual but truly enjoyed touring Rome, crossing Adriatic Sea and free time.

That's way too expensive.

I'm pretty sure I could do a 90 day grand tour of all of Western Europe for $25k.

That's not slumming it on a backpacker budget either. That's staying in AirBnB apartments in a major city center, traveling by high speed train, eating out at a decent restaurant every day and doing a few activities (museums, attractions) every day.

Not saying you should do that, just presenting an option for scale.
