WSJ:

quote:

U.S. Army troops faced off against Ukrainian drone operators at a military exercise in Germany earlier this year. It didn’t go well for the Americans.

During the exercise, called Combined Resolve, Ukrainian drone units easily spotted and defeated U.S. troops and armored vehicles on rotation from Fort Hood in Texas, according to people familiar with the events.

The exercise, coupled with U.S. casualties in Iran, shows American vulnerabilities to drones—years after the U.S. made uncrewed systems an essential part of warfare. America pioneered using long-range drones in war. The Pentagon has recently spent billions acquiring new drone and counterdrone technology and formed special units to operate it.

Wall Street Journal

We produce 100,000 drones a year. They produce 5 million a year while getting bombed daily. This is like watching Billy Mitchell or the Japanese Air Force against the British. Maybe Vance should stop sticking his thumb in their eyes every chance he gets.

I bet that whole "getting bombed daily" has something to do with how many drones get produced.

This is the pussification of our military and industrial complex since 2012 ...

Bring back meritocracy and competency and run this simulation in 5 -15 years.

Still, in the Middle East this year, the U.S. has struggled to defend against Iran’s long-range drones, which have killed and injured soldiers and destroyed aircraft.

Unless it is perfect, the WSJ will claim the US has struggled. The Iranian skirmish has caused the fewest number of lives and equipment lost than any other conflict in the history of the USA.

Frig' the WSJ and their liberal marxist messaging.

We're more interested in building $100 million dollar a pop F35 jets that some congressmen, defense contractors and lobbyists are getting fat on than anything that actually makes sense in a modern scenario.

This may well be true but if I'm the top brass of the military I'm not going to show my best in a war games scenario. That gets saved for when it's the real thing

Pretty sure the ghost of Kyiv would love a f35 right about now.

Don't forget Clinton's forced consolidation. That alone ruined Boeing.

It’s like the CIA guy said the the Paramount+ series “ Lioness” said….
“Fighting in the Ukraine/ Russia war is like fighting in WWI and Star Wars.”

The US has pioneered the use of drones but they are big platforms with big payload and are not a single use item.

The US military has lacked the forward thinking vision of small single use or multi-use drones that can be made quickly and cheaply. Their eyes were opened with Ukraine, but that is not acceptable. Even Hollywood saw how they could be used in these Gerhard Butler Secret Service movies with swarms of drones.

The US is throwing a lot of money at wingman drones for todays fighters that are autonomous, but I don't think enough is being thrown at the small units that can swarm or individually take out a tank or defense systems. We are definitely behind on that front and probably behind on how to defend ourselves from those same attacks.

That's just horse shite.

The US military is the best in the world overall; however, Ukraine has by far the best small unit tactical level drone warfare doctrine and experience in the world.

Keep in mind this exercise was limited and did not include the US current JADO doctrine. If that was used in full effect, the outcome would have been far different. This is just like if we had done a similar limited exercise in 2001 and we didn't use full Air Land Battle 2000 doctrine.

I have said from the beginning that the Russo-Ukrainian war was an inexpensive (for the US) laboratory for developing a more modern doctrine for US forces, particularly on land.

Just think of what a cartel could do with a fleet of such drones.

Send in Apaches for something, .........

Uh, no troops are gonna fair well against drones / drone operators, regardless of country.

This is a stupid story, appearing as we are behind Ukraine in something.

Reverse it and put Ukraine soldiers vs US drone operators and the results will be identical...

I’m no expert but it appears the U.S. specialized in large drones to use as bombers and spy planes, while Ukraine has focused on shoebox sized drones that hunt people and tanks.

It’s better yo be proficient in both. Ukraine probably has a lot to teach us in small drone warfare. They’ve been doing it live for years now.

I see the small drone as the crossbow in technology evolution. Before the crossbow a manor would produce a few knights per generation. These knights were well armored and trained and dominated the battlefield. Then the crossbow came along and now a peasant with 2 days training could kill a knight with 20 years battle experience.

As good as our special forces are they are vulnerable to a shoebox sized drone that moves 50 miles per hour and turns on a dime.

ETA: put ANY troops against ANY drones / drone operators and it's stilll the same.. don't care if it's S Korea vs Brazil or Iraq vs Belgium.

Just a stupid, stupid premise for a story.
