Today, if a person joins the national guard or the reserves…. they can plan on being deployed sometime during their enlistment.
I believe that all the troops that have died in the Iran war are all members of the NG. The six on the aircraft that crashed were Air National Guard, and the ones in Kuwait were Army National Guard The regular army heavily depend on the NG/ Reserves.

We were taught back in the 70s that boot camp was to train troops in basic combat training. It was explained that no matter what your MOS is…. the situation one day may require you to become 11B (Infantryman) and they teach you to kill. So cooks, truck drivers, drone operators, medics, etc… may have to take up arms against the enemy.
