Rep. Ro Khanna Wants to Cap Child Care at $10 a Day

As parents across the U.S. juggle work commitments and soaring childcare costs, a California Democrat wants Congress to offer a lifeline to struggling families, and sees a way in which it might actually happen.
On Friday, Rep. Ro Khanna plans to introduce a bill that would cap the cost of childcare at just $10 a day for every family earning under $250,000 annually. If it succeeds, the proposal could establish the U.S. equivalent of Canada’s landmark childcare initiative, known for significantly lowering costs and improving access.
As a father of young kids, I understand how difficult this is for families,” Khanna says. “Particularly for those who are away from grandparents or uncles or aunts and are working or middle class. But I also think that it is fundamental to giving people a fair shot at the American dream—that the biggest investment we can make is in young children to have a big economic return.”

You can't provide that service at that cost - and anyone who says they can are not properly caring for your child. The only way this works is if the government subsidizes child care- which I assume that this is where they are going.

We all know how well federal price controls work.

They would have to remove the liability of a daycare to do that. Insurance and regulations for daycare are the reason its so expensive. Not because daycares are greedy.
My aunt had the neighborhood daycare her whole life. It was before the crazy regulations. She ran it for 40 years with no issues and tons of happy kids and parents. No way she could do it today due to the restrictions.

He has introduced that bill before. Massive unfunded entitlement program. He also wants to cap credit card interest at 12%. Democrats love their price controls.

What daycare can keep the lights on for $10/day/kid?
What he is actually proposing is to drastically increase the number of federal employees and put the kids into government indoctrination centers. Every facet of the program would rely on federal money which would increase national debt and increase taxes on people just to start with.

Perhaps I am ignorant, and I’m ok with that here.
But shouldn’t we try to incentivize people/small businesses to invest and develop more child care facilities?
I mean, could create more jobs and drive down the costs of child care through competition/innovation.
Is that not possible? Great place to start for some female owned businesses since there’s tax advantages there as well.

$10 a day?
They plan on revoking the minimum wage for daycare workers?

How will daycare centers be able to pay their workers a minimum wage of $15-$18 per hour and provide good childcare if they can only charge $10 per day?

Whether intentionally or through sheer idiocy yes.

or the government makes up the difference?
It would be like Medicaid for daycare centers.
End result would be horrible quality of childcare, poor worker pay unless nationalized and federal government control of what your children are taught from birth.

No. We should promote families.
Childcare centers aren’t an innovation.

The California minimum wage is $16 per hour.
$10 a day won't even pay for an hour.

That is the goal, then there will be gov't run day cares that will be able to indoctrinate your children as they see fit.

Democrat math: 1,000 kids @ $10/day = $10,000/day

Why work at all people. Just have the government print paper and hand out. Whatever you don’t spend today just keep for toilet paper and help save the trees
