She then missed the next date (her fault). This put her in violation of US immigration law and effected her status.
I’m not trying to be an a-hole, but this is a pretty big something to miss. Also if she’s a cousin in law, is she not married to a US citizen?

Just guessing, but probably his wife's cousin.

She can't leave the country because she might not get back in (no US passport).
With no passport, how would she leave the US anyway?

Obama’s had filibuster proof House and Senate for two years. Why did he kick the can down the road?

Can you elaborate on the "missed the next date (her fault)" portion of your story?
No details. She was all set to go and they cancelled it after 9-11. I think at age 18, since everybody else in her family was an American (including brother and sister born after arrival) she was just careless. She emphasized that it was her fault though and that is what put her in limbo.
As for her looks-she's very attractive and married with a family. Husband is American citizen but that doesn't effect her status. I've known her since she was 7 or 8-her parents used to put her on a plane to visit me and Mrs Pimp when she was in HS. I'm very fond of her whole family.

Sounds like her excellent lawyer has work to do because she can't make an appointment.
I’m surprised you’re not asking him to explain the green card process to you.

Yeah, there's another side to this stoey.
There have to be some extreme personal issues with this individual to miss a hearing granting her citizenship....my guess is she was gaming the system in some way to get an advantage (foreign student type stuff) and didn't want to lose it at the time.
Not saying uts horrible, but there is something

Hope it works out for her and family.

She was scheduled to become a citizen after turning 18 in September 2001. Then 9-11 happened.
Can you tell me how a terrorist attack prevented her from her scheduled citizenship? I mean if she had taken all the correct steps to become a citizen, I don't see how 9/11 could have stopped it.
I sincerely hope this gets worked out for her, but the bottom line is that she has been here for 33 years, and an adult, who was fully aware that they were not a legal citizen for 15 of those years.
I'm sure it sucks for those caught up in it, but our laws can and should be enforced. The fact that some have skirted the law for years should only make the people caught up in the problem feel more personally responsible.

I know some baws that’ll marry her.

I hate that an otherwise productive member of society is in a bad spot, but in every case, with VERY few exceptions, the path to citizenship should begin at the US Embassy in the country of their birth.

How is this possible? I was under the impression that marriage resulted in citizenship (at some point).

I know a ton of women from Europe who married American men and got US Citizenship that way. It's not automatic but virtually automatic.
Also a Green Card is virtually US Citizenship anyway. How can she be kicked out?
Something is not adding up in this story.

Oh yeah. Lots being hidden. I always love that response. You don't have anything to offer except you don't understand so it must be something nefarious.
She's a freaking HS Civics teacher, mother and wife that has lived here since she was two. Not a felon or a terrorist. Jesus.

How does the marriage thing work? I thought that was automatic citizenship?

They came to America legally before her second birthday but she had no proper paperwork because she was a refugee baby and essentially stateless. Her parents and siblings are all US citizens.
Sounds like a slam-dunk for anyone working at Immigration that doesn't get all hard and wet at the thought of having people jump through bureaucratic hoops instead of just using a modicum of common sense in their judgement.

Im confused. I thought minor children of legal parents automatically become citizens?

They don't check citizenship, SSN, and such? No e-verify?
No background check?
Wouldn't a good Civics teacher not frick this up?
