You were right with this post. The Honda GX160 commercial grade engines have a dot on both crank and cam gear you line up like the Briggs. The Honda GVC160 consumer grade engines use the timing belt like the OP has.
You sound like you have first hand experience with this, and came ...

Obviously, 300 bucks won’t even buy a hooker and blow for the average OT baller’s routine Friday night, but some folks like myself have a problem with sticking 3 bills in the dumpster. Some folks like myself like working on stuff, figuring out the problem, and fixing it. Some folks won’t be totally ...
It is belt-driven with a little crank. I matched the notches up on the rod clamp and the crank just as they were before.
So on a 4 stroke motor, you could easily be 180 out, unless you know if the crank was in the power stroke or the exhaust stroke position....

re: Small Engine Mechanics of the OT - troyt37
No such thing as a timing issue on a lawnmower.
Well, I'm fairly old, but Briggs engines had a cam that worked on a gear on the crank. If you didn't line up the dot on the cam with the dot on the crank, you most certainly had a timing issue. A valve timing issue more precisely. St...

re: Small Engine Mechanics of the OT - troyt37
So that tells you that whatever serves for the exhaust valve is open when it should be closed on the power stroke. Your engine is firing, combusting the fuel/air, but because the exhaust valve is open, instead of that explosion driving the piston down in the power stroke, it is shooting out the exha...

re: Small Engine Mechanics of the OT - troyt37
I don't know anything about how the valves are actuated in this engine, or if it even has valves, but I'm going to say you have a timing issue of some sort. If that is the case though, it's highly unlikely that the motor ever ran after you put it together. Whether it has actual valves and a cam, ...
