Her husband being American is not enough. She has NO paperwork. No birth certificate from the camp (obviously). No camp documents that are legally acceptable. The only thing she has are photos, notarized statements and very incomplete entry documents when her parents came legally. So she is a legal resident, but not a Citizen.

And Cosmo-the kids become citizens at age 18. Mrs Pimp came at age 9 and was naturalized at age 19 for instance. And marrying a US citizen is NOT automatic.

And if a US citizen misses any type of court date, what happens to them? Their freedom gets taken away too

Your premise is false, though. Non-citizens aren't afforded the same benefits as citizens, so no I'm not put in jail forever if I miss a court date. Membership has it privileges, I guess.

TRUMP just set the bounty price.

Have her whack 10 liberals, and she's in like Flynn (Errol, not Michael).

Get it done....VC-style ... all stealth-like.

You just said she’s not a legal resident after she blew off her citizenship deal, right?

I’m no immigration expert, but even with her screwing up, it seems like as a spouse of an American citizen, she would be OK.

No she is a legal resident. I’m not sure why this is so hard .Not being threatened with deportation. Just in limbo .

She is a citizen of nowhere . Not Vietnam not Thailand not USA . A legal resident here .

Yep. That’s why I included it .She freely admits it . 17 years later she’s still paying for her mistake.

The fact that 17 years has passed and she's still lamenting a fix to her "problem" tells us everything we need to know about just how broken our immigration system is.

Is she just now trying to correct this mistake? Does this have anything to do with who's in office right now because 17 years seems like an awfully long time to not do anything about it. I can understand anyone neglecting to take care of something like that. My buddy's fiance from Canada forgot to submit her student visa application on time this year and she had to jump through some hoops to take care of it, but 17 years? That just screams to me she's leaving something out and it wasn't solely just her being neglectful.

The cynical side of me says that the cousin's hope was that HER would get in office and just grant blanket amnesty to whomever happened to be here. (This doesn't address her apparent lack of action since Bush41, but the point remains).

It will come across rude, but this was piss poor lazy all the way around. I do not think she needs to be sent out, but seriously it was an epic fail and these stories are almost as bad as what Kimmel tried to trot out there with the American soldier.

I was a 20 something during 9/11 and it did not change my responsibilities. I have little sympathy for people who are just lazy.

Do the damn paperwork!!!

She was scheduled to become a citizen after turning 18 in September 2001. Then 9-11 happened. Her naturalization was put on hold. She then missed the next date (her fault). This put her in violation of US immigration law and effected her status.

She has a green card. She has a great attorney. She can't leave the country because she might not get back in (no US passport). She is a -get this-HS Civics teacher and a patriot. She somehow has fallen through the cracks.

So what's the problem? I'm on a green card myself. What missed date did she miss to put her in limbo? As far as I know, not getting naturalized is never a problem as long as you have the green card. I could choose to stay in the US indefinitely with a green card without naturalizing if I wanted to and would not be in immigration limbo.

EDIT: She also doesn't seem to be at risk for deportation.

I think the problem is that she wants to be a citizen because she’s a Civics teacher, has lived in the US since age two and every other member of her family is a citizen. She’s not in deportation limbo. She’s in CITIZENSHIP limbo.

And just no to everybody who thinks there is something “more” or hidden. She just lacks documentation. She can’t produce it . She was born in a tent city as a refugee. There are no documents from Vietnam - no birth certificate. She is in the grey area. I’m not sure why people resist that idea so much.

Well that changes everything for this thread. We were led to believe there is a crisis and she would be ripped from her family. Now simply our replies should be

Well, with all due respect (and I don't mean to sound callous or hostile), this sounds like it's a personal responsibility issue, that she in fact acknowledges she brought on herself.

She teaches Civics, then she should have some understanding of the topic she teaches. She was negligent on her own end in addressing the citizenship aspect, by missing a scheduled appointment and not following up for damn near 2 DECADES. This is like never registering for the Draft upon coming of age, and then complaining years later that failing to do so has caused issues.

It makes for an interesting human interest tale, but the fact remains she has not done the required work on her end.
