I think they've been pretty open that they're trying to lose money and fund it with taxes from what they call "rich" people.

Bad Hombre
@Badhombre
Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany eliminated their government-run grocery stores between 1989-1990.
The Soviet Union eliminated them between 1991-1992.
Vietnam eliminated them in 1986.
Yugoslavia eliminated them in 1991.
China began eliminating them in the late 1970s.
Cuba began eliminating them in 2021.
Every attempt in Western capitalist countries has failed, most recently in Chicago.
But Mamdani has somehow cracked the code.

Everyone, even the lefties here, knows this will be a failure. It will be propped up as a "success" by the media, however. Mamdani will have to raise or shift the funding for these stores from other areas to cover the losses.
The supplier of these grocery stores are NOT reducing their prices by 30%. So right out the bat, the grocery stores operate at a loss. However, if you pull a Hochul, and use state taxes to prop up NYC, or in this case, the government grocery stores, you can hide the loss, at least until you get a few more communists elected.
The idiots of NYC deserve everything they are asking for.

This is going to be a disaster and boondoggle for the ages. The only way it will work is with massive taxpayer subsidies.
They will pay no rent, and probably get city tax breaks. How would you like to be a bodega next door. Your city taxes you, then uses that money to pay for your competitor next door.

I forgot that he promised free food at first lol
Made a presser to backtrack on his initial promise
Not that this will ever happen

Couple of thoughts
1) this will have almost 0 effect on the overall cost of groceries for New Yorkers
2) if the socialist grocery stores can remain viable with these sort of “discounts,” that means the cost of interacting with government is ~30% of the cost of groceries.

So privately owned grocers will have to compete against a government owned Grocer, selling products for 30% less because it’s subsidized by tax dollars.
How that fair?
Why does business want to compete in that environment ?

So many New Yorkers will have a great opportunity to learn basic economics.
But will they?
But will they?

Even with a 30% discount I bet prices are still outrageous in NYC.

It’ll be interesting to see how DSA communists deal with shoplifters from their state controlled grocery stores since they don’t believe in prisons or punishment for criminals.
For those that are unfamiliar with how communism works. Shoplifting from the gov't is not allowed. They will be dealt with harshly. And the commie mayor and the msm will say "It is unacceptable to steal from THEIR stores and put YOUR food prices at risk. And idiots will not even comprehend that that also is a way of saying it is OK to steal but not from the govt.

This is idiotic socialist math.
Who cares how much cheaper the food is in the store if that deficit is passed directly to another payer?
It's the same logic as "free health care" and "free college." Those two things simply don't exist anywhere without slave labor and without ignoring most laws of economics.

So like Publix buy one get one sale that rotates items on a 6 week or so cycle? Clever work by the Muslim communist and the pasty white chick assistant that will be the last to be thrown off the Empire State building.

Ah yes, the old tried and true mush head liberal defense "we have to do SOMETHING!!!"
Nevermind the ramifications of that something. Countless times the "something" liberals so quickly do causes more harm than good. Liberal's kneejerk emotional responses spare no time to do proper research on the root of the problem, the cause, or the best solution. They just do "SOMETHING" and then walk away feeling smugly good about themselves, leaving a shitshow in their wake.
Look no further than the ban on controlled burns on underbrush in forests to minimize the impact of fires. GOTTA SAVE THOS SNAIL DARTERS!@!!!!! SO the forest builds a base of tinder that rages into a forest fire that decimates thousands of acres of land and property. Oh, and it cooks the frick out of those snail darters. But the liberals NEVER look back and take accountability for their stupid actions. They felt better about themselves, and that's all that matters.
More and more I see clearly that to be a liberal is to be a woman, no matter your chromosome makeup.
