Exactly and how many times has he encountered young black shoplifters and not shot them? Probably hundreds.
Reality is that the prosecution overcharged. Consensus seems to be that if they had gone for manslaughter they could have gotten a verdict and possibly a 30 year sentence.

The store owner claimed the 14-year-old pointed the gun at his son. The prosecutors say that never happened.
