Isn't one of the hallmarks of modern day politics digging up dirt on your opponent? Why is this a story? Is it because it was "RUSSIA" and not an individual?

People have to keep this on blast.

If they let you settle in and ask what the dirt was then it becomes about the actual crimes Hillary committed and they dont want that story.

Trump business buddy - "This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and it's support of Trump."

Trums Son - "If it is what you say, I love it".

Attempted collusion with a foreign government, but the jury's is still out as to whether that is a crime.

A Russian attorney contacted Trump Jr. saying she had a bombshell on the Clintons.

Trump Jr. decided to take the meeting with Manafort and Kushner.

The attorney actually had no info on the Clintons but instead wanted to talk about a law that forbids foreigners from adopting Russian children (a law that was passed to prevent Russian children from being used in sex trafficking around the world).

Kushner and Manafort walked out of the meeting once it became clear that it was a waste of time.

The Russian attorney actually works for a firm routinely used by the democratic party for opposition research.

The media is now using this as proof of Russian collusion with the Trump Campaign, but it actually looks like Trump Jr. was baited into a phony meeting by the DNC contractor to create the illusion of Russian collusion.

Trump Jr colluded with a Russian lawyer who wasn't working with the kremlin in order to obtain damaging information that doesn't exist on Clinton for no charge.

The attorney he met with is of Russian heritage. She was not a Russian government agent.

They almost had him this time.

Someone who drinks Stoli claimed to have dirt on Hillary. Jr. took the meeting.

Nothing came of it. There were no plans, conspiracies, or collision.

Media finds out and it fuels media's wild fantasies and speculation.

That's about it.

So there wasn't any dirt. Let's say there was dirt, but they got it from an individual instead of a gov. Is there still outage over that? Makes no sense to me

Trump Jr. will be on Hannity tonite; let him explain. Not that he needs to; only a slacker would have turned down the 'dirty laundry' on Hillary. And Jr. knows better than to slack.

If you believe that Don jr., Kushner, or Manafort didnt tell Trump about the meeting you are naive.

Manafort has been in politics long enough to know this is not normal and could become illegal.

I just want to know what aspect of digging up dirt on your opponent is illegal? Seems like every election has some degree of illegality to it if finding dirt on your opponent is a crime

If we criminalize digging up dirt,

wouldn't that put the media out of business?

The theory would be that you don't want quid pro quo favors from a foreign government (particularly one that isn't exactly an ally) in exchange for being beholden to that foreign government or giving return favors to that foreign government that might not be in the best interest of the US. Of course the Trump Jr meeting with the lawyer everyone is going crazy about seems to be a far cry from anything close to that scenario, but in theory that is why you would not want campaign financing or other discreet "favors" from a foreign government in a campaign.

It's legitimate to be concerned that any administration's decision-making would be compromised by favors owed to a potentially adverse foreign nation. Of course we all know that in this global political and economic world such entanglements do exist but hopefully not in a way that seriously jeopardizes US interests. However, there is simply no evidence thus far that the Trump administration is in any way improperly influenced or compromised by Russia (to the contrary Trump has made some decidedly anti-Russian decisions thus far). This Trump Jr thing is really the first piece of evidence at all on the "collusion" front, but it's really not much and alone won't amount to anything. People are wondering if they finally found the tip of the iceberg. That remains to be seen I guess.
