Dan Patrick crusaded against THC. Texas voters rolled him up and smoked him.

Houston Chronicle:Texas' Lt. Gov. told voters to oust him if they didn't like his efforts to ban THC. They did just that.
I understand not liking things. I understand thinking things will harm people. But when people who elect you seem to signal to you something they want, how foolish is it to just dig your heels in and double down.
I don’t think anyone wants weed legalized everywhere. But I do think there’s room for regulation, especially in the THC Beverage industry.
Dan Patrick is an example of what happens when your constituents say one thing and you blatantly decide the other. Republicans can be smarter. Hold them accountable and make them be.
quote:
At a June 23, 2025 news conference after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed a bill that would have banned the sale of THC products in Texas, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick was furious. He accused Abbott of trying to "legalize recreational marijuana in Texas." Then, whether he knew it or not, he uttered a statement that would become the epitaph of his political career: "I'm not going to legalize marijuana in Texas. And if people want to vote me out of office for that, so be it," Patrick said.
quote:
A year and six months later, the people of Texas showed him the door. On Tuesday night, amid a blue tsunami that ended decades of Republican control of Texas, Patrick lost to Vikki Goodwin, a relatively unknown Texas state representative from Austin. Patrick, the savvy master of the Texas Senate who ushered in that chamber's hard-right transformation during his tenure, lost by just over 6 percentage points with 98 percent of the vote counted. Was it THC? And to hear THC industry leaders and analysts tell it, Patrick's feverish crusade to ban THC products in Texas are a reason he's out of a job. Cynthia Cabrera, chief strategy officer at Austin-based hemp retailer Hometown Hero, was nearly speechless when reached for comment on Wednesday morning. "This is a repudiation of Republicans in Texas not listening to constituents," Cabrera told Chron by phone.

I don’t partake in weed, don’t even drink, but Texas laws on cannabis are ridiculous.

Tn R's tightened regulations on thc earlier this year. They won the big races but the numbers are getting tight.

A win for Willie, no doubt.

Grown adults throwing a tantrum over weed is funny. Like grow up and do something productive. Dude got swept up in the blue wave like everyone else.

Every single Republican lost every statewide race in Texas. I highly doubt his defeat had anything to do with THC. He was going down regardless just like the rest.

Is it actually about weed or is it about elected officials saying frick you to their constituents?

it's about people voting straight D down the ballot because the R's have been a disaster.

Dan Patrick wanted weed smokers in texas to face stiffer penalties than violent criminals.

I still can't figure out why the hell the GOP is so against legalizing weed. Its not addictive, you can't really overdose, don't have to worry about it causing medical emergencies, and its already completely legal in many areas plus very widely legalized for medicinal use with it not being particularly difficult to get a medical marijuana prescription.
Some bible thumping retirees may not like it, but it's an issue that would get big approval numbers from Gen Z and millennial voters. I don't even smoke weed, but its ridiculous at this point to not legalize it, regulate it, and create tax revenue from it.

This election was largely defined by MAGA stomping repeatedly on its own dick.
This is just more of that. Ridiculous self inflicted wound.

With all due respect, I can't tell if you're talking about the constituents or the politicians.
Believe whatever you want about why he's out - but it's clear that this is certainly part of it. And examples like it just help build up why Republicans lose. It's like Bill Cassidy, Louisiana's own cautionary tale. If people you represent tell you what they want, then fricking do it. There's no middle ground. YOU work for THEM. That's the bottom line.
Take this example right here. It's not really about weed. It's about doing what your constituents want. Just like in Washington. People sent Republicans to Washington in 2024 to work for them. Then they did nothing. Like literally nothing. I guess it turns out that doing nothing and just collecting a check isn't what they want. They'll let you know. It's just that GOP has a long history of learning the hard way.

He was a shill for the alcohol lobby.

He is just one of many. Incredibly dumb to piss on your voters. When you don’t at least listen and give lip service to those that elect you, bad things happen.
War in Iran is unpopular admin does it anyways and it fuels a absolute beat down.

Yeah I mean if you just want to win the election obviously he should have shifted.
But if he feels strongly that this stuff is bad for society, and it is IMO, then I respect him for standing on business.
