I’m not talking about the union execs. I’m talking about the longshoremen.

33% make more than $200k in the NY/NJ ports as well. Check page 19 of the Waterfront Commission report LINK
So you’re only pulling salary numbers from the highest cost of living port on the east coast and using that to represent the other dozens of ports? Sounds logical.

Check out pages 23-32 of that Waterfront Commission report where they run through the criminals and organized crime links of the union.
Cool. Unions are shite. I don’t recall talking about ethics of unions. We’re talking about how much Longshoremen make.
Locally….they're starting between $19-22 an hour and caps out around $40. Let’s focus on the subject matter.

I'm always in the mood for union busting, but this one seems like a matter of national security.
Bust away. Biden should give them 48 hours and anybody who doesn't report back is fired immediately. Activate the National Guard to take over the ports until it's re-staffed 100%.

You haven't posted any facts or statistics. If you know more than everyone else, maybe you should post it? Or you can be a pompous arse with no qualifications for acting like one.

I can see how you would think that seeing as how you are completely unfamiliar with the terms "facts" and "statistics".
What I've posted in this thread is absolutely factual. You should try using Google. It's a pretty big deal.

Please provide a link saying they wanted 77% raise in only 1 year.

I have experienced a CEO at hospital pulling back a $3 dollar raise for ICU nurses after claiming the hospital was not profitable that year. A investigation determined the Hospital made 15 million profit that year and the CEO gave himself a 1 million dollar bonus on top of his 5 million dollar salary. Within 6 months the Hospital had voted for a union and the Nurses received a $5 dollar raise. Like I said, FAFO.

I don't see why ports in the right to work states don't just say screw you guys we wont be renewing the contract, fire the union guys, rehire the scabs and automate to cover the difference. I know that makes it hard to do business in the Union states, but just stop shipping to those ports.

Just dropping in to say, frick unions.

I'm replying to you where you said this:
quote:
That’s how much they make on the west coast. Those ports are still open. Those longshoremen are part of a different Union.
So yes, pointing out that an east coast port with a large number of workers also has a third of its workers making more than $200k does seem relevant.
What does cost of living have to do with anything? The master contract covers the workers from Maine to Texas. If the union didn't see fit to negotiate different pay rates for different cost of living areas, that's their own issue. Sounds like it makes more sense to be a longshoreman in a low COL making the same money as a longshoreman in a high COL.

always love uneducated post like these. Over the last 20 years CEO pay has went from 1 million a year to 30 million plus a year. Why the workers pay was stagnant.
You want CEO pay then go start a fricking company...this is AMERICA...
you have everything at your disposal to do whatever you want. Quit bitching at the people who provide your job and benefits and go do what they did...I am sick of the the whining and blame culture...if you you have a bottom layer job it's YOUR fault..Do something.

MAGA needs the Union baws to win… just saying
This isn’t a normal negotiation with the visibility it’s getting… and every Union everywhere is watching the rhetoric from both sides. The brotherhood truly extends across the country and across all industries

The OT: Unions no longer serve a purpose. I wouldn’t join a union because I want to negotiate for myself based upon my own ability.
Also the OT: They should disband the union because there’s plenty of non union workers that would accept those jobs for lower wages.

quote:I wish this wasn't the case, but because of NY and the vast amount of tonnage that enters there that's not practical. All the other ports combined can't make up for NY (which is a multitude of port facilities).

the problem is NY is a closed shop state. You either have to bust the union, at which time Holchul will do the reverse of DeSantis- bring in the guard and NY AG James to force port operators to accept the union deal, or they have to accept the deal.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned (seems to be intentionally avoided) is the relationship between security and automation. Ports are most definitely a national security focus point and automation would assist LEO and DHS in providing that security.

1(one) east coast port. There are 14 ports currently on strike. If you can show me even half of the rest making anything close to that....then I'll conceed.

does seem relevant.
Not when taking into consideration that's only 1 of 14 ports.

Are you actually asking what cost of living has to do with salaries?

That is false. There are local ILA chapters and each have their own pay scale. The President of ILA970 makes $170k/year. Are you arguing that the field workers are making more than him? Or are you just not aware that the contract you're referring is ONLY for that local ILA chapter and that there actually isn't a "master contract" which blankets the entire East Coast and Gulf states? I'm going for that last part.

You're right....it would.....if they all make the same....but they don't.

You might be correct. But CEO pay going from 1 million to 30 million plus is even more outrageous. So I believe in order to get fair treatment so times you have to resort to outrageous tactics
The former CEO of the Port of New Orleans, Brandy D. Christian, was paid $350,000 annually. When Christian left the role, the Port of New Orleans board engaged a consulting firm to lead the search for a new CEO.
