My guess is he was trying to get the son back into rehab (son was probably partying too hard at Conan's), they got in an arguement. RR told son if he didn't go he was cut off.

An atheist can believe that it's wrong to have an abortion, or that assisstance from the government is only meant for citizens, or that taxes should be lower, or that we should have a strong military, etc. There are atheists who are great people and religious people who are horrible people. Does one path tend to guide you towards certain values more than the other? I would have to say yes, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.
