Technically my great uncle. Closer in age to my dad than grandmother. So I always called him uncle.

One thing I have learned in life so far is to not expect anything to be given to me even if it is promised. If someone in my family decides to give me something now or after they die, I am and will be gracious and thankful. But I am not counting on anything until I actually have it in hand. I have watched my brother steal and waste money "loaned" from my parents and my brother in law do the same from my wife's parents. At first I was pretty pissed, but realized that it's not my money or stuff to be concerned with in the first place. It has made me a better person, because if I want something bad enough, I work my butt off to get it. For my brother (who is now in jail) and my sibling in laws that worry about this everyday, they will never be accountable for themselves and when mommy and daddy pass, they will finally have to learn how to make it on their own.

I have an expression which I have honed from years of dealing with all kinds of people in my family. After this ridiculous and sad story I think it's appropriate to share it with you and everyone else here. Here it is:
Family. You can't kill 'em.
Family. You can't kill 'em.

Our family land is the same way. Some of our family hasn't talked in years. Just move on and maybe he will let you still go out there. Don't get all butt hurt yet, if he won't let you hunt and fish then get butt hurt.

Had a similar situation happen to my family. Extremely close family freind (considered him a grandfather for many years) had a 1,500 acre ranch in Idaho right behind the Tetons, a 600 acre fishing ranch on the Falls River in Idaho, a house in San Miguel, Mexico, La Jolla, Bel Aire and Palm Springs. My family and I had them pretty much to our disposal my whole life until he recently began selling them one by one. Wanted my kids to grow going to these places like I did but not in the cards. He still has a nice piece of property in NWLA that we can fish and ride around on which is nice. Can't complain though. None of was actually mine and I had tons of great memories at all these places growing up.

You sound whiny and entitled. It's your grandparents land to with it as they see fit.

I feel your pain.As much as I love deer hunting it can be a huge hassle, especially dealing with family.
In November 2010 my dad committed suicide. The night before Thanksgiving to be exact. He was my hunting partner and best friend.I hunted in a "club" with my inlaws.I did not hunt that year until a couple days after Christmas.
I already had vacation scheduled for the Christmas break to hunt with my dad and 5 yr old son at the time.Well, since he was no longer here I invited his best friend to join my son and I.His friend was 70 the time and just likes going but rarely kills. It was gonna be good for both of us.We get there and were trying to decide on stands for the next morning. There were 2 boxes that were in close proximity to each other that would be good.My wifes uncle asked who the 2nd stand was for.I told him and was quickly told that "we dont allow guests during the rut,no exceptions".
I was ready to leave at that point. My MIL had basically taken care of that uncle for 10 years while he was going through personal issues and job loss. She as livid,as was my wife.
That uncle has more issues than Time magazine but has created a family war over his perception of the way things should be.Its pretty much his way or the highway.
We distanced ourselves from that individual and our lives are much better. We hunt on our own property and the stress level is basically zero.At the time it seemed like I was at rock bottom but doors opened for our family and we count our blessings every day.I hope the situation improves for you....End of hijack.

You can contest the sale, but you better act fast. If your grandfather told you he wanted you to have the property and he is currently suffering from dementia then you can contest the sale but would need to have him ruled by a judge mentally incapable of making the decision (there's a legal term that is slipping my MI D right now).
This happens often with elderly people changing their Wills under the influence of another person while they are not of sound mind.
Not sure you have time or would even want to have a court order rulling him mentally unfit to make this decision.
That's a tough situation

It's a shame, but families fight within each other all the time over property. I'm sorry you have to go through it, but life ain't always fair. Some people are just greedy and can't help it.

I'm glad the older members of my family locked their assets into trusts and I never have to worry about that sort of thing. Some idiots will spend the majority of their inheritance just fighting each other over it.

Can you challenge the sale based on your grandfather's mental abilities? AKA the Benson battle?

That sucks man.
Maybe your uncle will let you still be part of it.
1500 acres is a lot of land.

Doesn't sound like he has much hope for that. Hell, the uncle didn't even offer to sell him 25 acres.

I know you're venting, but I've got to be honest:
If a member of your congregation came to you with this same situation, what would you do?

Feel you pain, same thing happened a little over a year ago to our ranch except it was worse bc it was flat out sold, not kept in the family.
Hopefully your uncle will still let you access the property, maybe try and work something out where you can buy some back down the road.
