You hear a lot about "imposter syndrome" do any of you feel it at work?

I don't feel imposter syndrome per se but I def am in conversations where I know I am out of my league. I don't feel like an imposter, I just feel like I should learn more about those areas but also remember I don't have to be an expert on everything. That's why companies hire many many different specialties.

That's perfectly fine, it indicates self awareness. I was in a room with four CCIEs (highest Cisco networking cert you can get) on a project and knew it was my job at that time to just STFU.
I'm a curious person by nature, so I pay attention even to stuff I don't understand.

"Fake it till you make it" has put a lot of people into a comfortable retirement.

I used to. Nowadays I just straight up tell people when I have absolutely no clue what’s going on.

I work in cybersecurity and I come from a non-technical/non-IT background. I am swimming the deep end each day. My curiosity and research skills have gotten me far but I still feel like everyone around me is so knowledgeable in their field. My role is also 5 miles wide and 1 inch deep so its hard to know a ton about 1 thing. I know a little about a ton of things...

When I was younger, sure.
Now that I have been in the industry a while. Hell no, now I think the others are just much dumber than me and faking it.

I think everyone who is good at their job has this a bit. You are nervous you didn't do enough to get where you are.
Those who think they are great are the ones who can't see they are actually the imposters

I once managed 17 FTEs who were working for 6 different clients, all specialized in something that I am not familiar with. I had no clue what they actually did, and I hated it.
I did that for 2 years before peacing out on that nonsense.

I'm retired after 40 years on the job - I never felt I was on top of things, but I kept getting raises and promotions so somebody must have seen some value in my efforts.

I'm semi retired now, but had a 30 year career of completely winging it that worked out pretty well.

I’m the controls guy at work, so I hear a lot from braindead operators who think they know how things work. They should have imposter syndrome but they’re too dumb to realize what they don’t know.
