Would you be OK with a “Pay Up Front” society?

We are devolving into a world where theft & culcha is rampant. I feel for these business owners these days as it seems the ghetto is affecting every corner.
There’s only so many levers they can pull, and as we move to a low-trust society, would you be okay with a up front pay structure to protect businesses from theft?
This clearly has its cons since they have your money and incentive to impress can go away, potentially causing quality of product to take a hit.
But I may be okay with it if it stops more people from stealing.
*Obviously*, we should just be stricter on theft and punish it much more harshly, but I don’t see the world moving in that direction.

Pay up front for what?
I'm not paying up front to enter a retail store if that's what you're suggesting.

If a business decided to require a card be put on file for an order to be placed, I wouldn't be offended.
Would make for some awkward dinners with the family when people are arguing about who is paying the bill/putting card on file before we even got served anything, but it is what it is.

Besides a restaurant, I pay up front for everything.

I'm totally fine with that in a dining setting.

I could see something where you have to scan your card to enter the store and it automatically charges you for any items you take. no card no entry.

Service Merchandise style shopping? I'd love it.
Dining? I wouldn't have a huge problem with basically "opening a tab with a cc" upon being seated.
Theft and Dine and dash costs us all.

No what we need is a total rebuild of the justice department and law enforcement to take the kid gloves off and treat people who cannot follow simple laws and rules they way we all know they should be treated.
This would take a total rebuilding of the entire political system since politics in our times are about catering to the scumbags and do nothings and not normal law-abiding citizen of this country.
Non of this will ever happen without bloody force and people have not suffered enough to feel like really fighting back yet. So more laws and rules are only going to impact law abiding citizens and do nothing it was intended to do.

No.
Why inconvenience all of society a portion of 12% that cannot behave like humans?
Companies should however be clear about why they close brick and mortar locations in areas where theft is high. Stop mealy mouthing around saying the obvious: we’re closing locations in black neighborhoods because black people are stealing. Don’t hide behind “market trends” bullshite.

shite, I'd kind of like it.
Same thing really as starting a tab at a bar and them giving the card back to you.

Perhaps separate but equal establishments.

I’m perfectly OK doing anything that deters that certain segment of society from not being at the same place that I’m at so absolutely I would be in favor of it

No, I’m not in favor of building out the surveillance state because a percentage of the population can’t be trusted to have basic morals, self-control, or integrity.
Punish them harshly. Make examples out of them. I don’t care about prison population stats or what percentage of what group is in prison. That’s irrelevant. Did they commit the crime or not?
And we all know how this would actually play out. This type of thing would rarely be used against the people it’s supposedly meant for. It would be saved for normal tax-paying citizens who happen to disagree politically with some future Progressive/Democrat administration.
See: Canadian truckers during COVID.

My memory could be fuzzy- I was a kid back then.
I'd be cool though with everything being in the back and walking around looking at demos.
Shopping would be so much easier, less visual clutter, actually get to handle the item you're interested in instead of it being behind plexiglass.
No shopping cart wars... oh, it would be glorious!

I used to work at the chimes on coursey and they would do this for parties of 8 or more...you should have seen the outcry and offended mentality of certain large groups. 99% of the time you could tell if they were gonna cause a scene as soon as they walked in the door
