Words you have f*cked up for quite a while
Posted by JumpingTheShark on 12/28/16 at 12:51 pm111
For pretty much two and a half decades I thought awry was pronounced awe-ree.
I'm a dumb.

malleable.
I've always pronounced it mal-able. Apparently, it's mal-e-able.

I've said homage as hoe-mage a few times. It still makes me cringe thinking about it.

I'm tired of hearing people frick up these two:
Nuclear (keep hearing nu-CA-lor
Realtor (keep hearing re-LA-tor)

When I was little, my grandmother would say "you're so ornery". For years, I thought she was calling me "ordinary" because of the way she pronounced it.

Biopic. I still have to slow down and make sure to pronounce it bio-pic instead of bi-ah-pic (like you would pronounce bionic).
"Gif" is another one. I used to be an idiot and think it was pronounced with a hard "g", but now I'm enlightened and understand it is pronounced like the peanut butter.

Dilemma
As a kid I saw it spelled as dilemna and for probably twenty years I spelled and pronounced it with an "n" in it. I was so sure of myself that I actually corrected others on it until I looked it up and found out what an idiot I was.

We've done this thread before. G in GIF stands for graphic, hence why some use the hard "G". The person who invented the format uses the soft "G" pronunciation, so that's the one I use. Everyone I know says the hard "G" though.

I struggle with the word Massachusetts and it gets worse when I actually think about saying it.

Good example, I do the same.
