I think this is more of an accent thing. If someone has a thick southern drawl or british accent, I wouldn't judge them at all for this.

For pretty much two and a half decades I thought awry was pronounced awe-ree.

I don't believe I've ever used that word in my 33 years on this planet

Anybody annoyed that flammable and inflammable mean the EXACT SAME THING? Usually, the prefix "in" means "not". As in, not able to be set on flames (incorrect = not correct). Yet, inflammable is derived from the word inflamed, meaning burning the frick up. Stupid.

I have pronounced it ki-batta since I can remember. My fiancée finally had enough and said it was chi-batta. The jury is still out in this one for me.

My good friend pronounced brioche as "bri-oh-chi" once at a restaurant, I didn't say anything, I just laughed to myself.

For years, I thought she was calling me "ordinary" because of the way she pronounced it.
She was and you are.

She was not ordinary.

Dumbest I've felt at a restaurant was when I asked the waitress what are-u-gu-la is (arugula).

not me, but I can't believe how often I see people type "sorry for your lost" when commenting on the loss of a loved one.

I just have to assume that those people would be saying it out loud incorrectly as well? I just don't understand how that's possible.

We've done this thread before. G in GIF stands for graphic, hence why some use the hard "G". The person who invented the format uses the soft "G" pronunciation, so that's the one I use. Everyone I know says the hard "G" though.

This was earlier in the thread, but I had this thought the other night. Sometimes I pronounce it wrong if the person(s) I'm with are saying it wrong. I don't feel like explaining it to them, so I just file their indiscretions away for my own records.

we had a 30 something project manager send out mass emails where he would use "words" like aholt...as in, "you can get aholt of me anytime day or night."

had a friend use the word amnesty in place of animosity on multiple occasions. i'm not one to correct people over silly shite usually, but we were in an argument once and he said something like "why is there all of this amnesty between us?" and i responded with "it's animosity dickhead, now go frick yourself."
