Brevard is great. Dupont State Forest is nearby and has great easy and more difficult hikes (Triple Falls, Hooker Falls, High Falls). Sliding Rock is nearby
Table Rock in SC is great, but more of a day hike.
Chimney Rock is east of Asheville and a good one
Some great waterfalls around Cashier's also

seems like a lot of logistics to juggle...
It was, but it really wasn't bad. Most of the places were a 2-3 hour bus / train ride.

Do a lot of slovenians speak good English?
Yeah, the language barrier was a non-factor

This is totally absurd
Next time I'll clear it with the Fun Bunch first...
It's a lot of moving around, but even with kids it has worked fine for us. Have you never been on a weekend trip?
Honestly, I could have stayed in Bovec longer, but we would have been bored if we stayed anywhere (other than London)_much longer than we did.

I really wanted to get to Bosnia when we were in Croatia, but just couldn't do everything.
Slovenia - may be new favorite country, incredible scenary, good food, and not overrly touristy (at least compared to others).
Norway and Scandanvia in general are definitely up there, just seems so expensive, which is scaring me off from South of France. I am not pinching pennies, but it's so much more fun (for me), when food prices don't sink me

3. Poland. Kraków is the cultural and historical capital of Poland, famous for its beautifully preserved medieval Old Town. If you liked Ljubljana, you' love Kraków! Could consider the sober side and go to Auschwitz. Everyone should see that if they can. Sobering. But for kids? A decision point.
Poland is very interesting for me...
2026 Europe Trip
Posted by CidCock on 6/19/26 at 8:23 am
Just wrapped up our 3rd European trip with the kids (now ages 6 and 12), and once again it was a fantastic experience.
London – 2 nights
Dubrovnik, Croatia – 3 nights
Ljubljana, Slovenia – 3 nights
Soca Valley/Bovec, Slovenia – 2 nights
Salzburg, Austria – 3 nights
Munich, Germany – 3 nights
London was a great starting point. We flew a daytime flight from NYC, which was a game changer with kids (at least for my kids).
A few highlights:
Walking the old city walls in Dubrovnik. We also did a snorkeling/cave swimming tour that was one of the highlights of the trip. Dubrovnik was beautiful but very tourist and had several cruises stop in during our stay.
Lake Bled was like a post card, but felt a bit over the top with all the hotels etc. We did enjoy the summer toboggan.
Driving through the Julian Alps and spending time in the Soca Valley. It was rainy in Bovec, but we were able to do some short hikes.
Sound of Music sites in Salzburg (I have two girls ).
Neuschwanstein Castle as a day trip from Munich
Munich was probably the biggest disappointment for us, although part of that was weather-related. It rained for most of our time there, and I suspect we'd have enjoyed it more under better conditions. We also stayed in a not so great area near the main train station. Airbnb's were very expensive and went with a hotel, but would probably do it differently if we go back.
Ljubljana ranked among our favorite stops of any trip so far. It reminded us a lot of Ghent. We loved spending the evenings along the river, drinking wine and eating cheese and baguettes.
Slovenia in general was just incredible. It was my first time driving in Europe, but it was super easy and we covered a ton of ground. I think that's my strategy moving forward.
We're looking at ideas for Europe 2027 and trying to balance a few priorities:
Family-friendly
Good mix of history, scenery, and culture
Reasonable costs
Currently considering some combination of northern Spain and the South of France, and perhaps somewhere in Slovakia or the Baltics, but we're very open to suggestions. In 2025, we did Spain and Portugal (Madrid, Grenada, Seville, Lagos, Lisbon).
For those who travel Europe regularly with kids, where would you go next?

James Island off of Harbor View.
I love Charleston, but I had to drive to Daniel Island daily and it was awful.
I know Columbia > CHS is sacralidge to Charleston people. I get it, Chas is obviously a world class city and Cola is not.
But I go to work, take my kids to school, go to the dr, grocery store, church, etc....it's just an easier life in Cola for me.

I live in Columbia and near Ft Jackson in the Forest Acres area. It's a great place to live, but hotel situation near the fort isn't great. I would recommend staying in the Vista - there's a Hyatt on Gervais that's nice and a Hilton (along with several others). I can make some food recommendations if you'd like.
It's oppreisvely hot in July, but if you are looking for an activity - floating the congaree is great (water is cold as it comes from the bottom of Lake Murray).
I have lived in Charleston and Columbia, Columbia is a better place to live (considering COL) but Charleston is definitely a better visit.

Frenchman saying the bathrooms at Buc-ee's are clean. While they are very clean to our standards, they are average in cleanliness to the public bathrooms I have been to in Europe.
Edit to admit...it costs 1 euro to use the bathroom there. This pays the guy who keeps them clean.
I just returned from 17 days in Europe (Germany, Austria, England) and my biggest gripe is paying to use nasty rest area level bathrooms. Surely your post isn't serious.
There are many great things about Europe, the bathroom situation is among the worst.

amazing how many in the cult blindly supported the iran bombing....they know damn well had it been biden doing it, they'd be up in arms. But since trump did "guys we had to for....reaons"
Fair, but an equal number of people oppose the bombing bc orange man bad. The same people who said Trump was weak on Iran are against the campaign.
I sold my speedy to help finance my Batgirl. I miss it often and love that you never see them in the wild (outside of certain places in the USA).
I almost want to sell my Rolex and get another, but I know I’d regret it and you can’t just go buy another.

Great post, thanks for sharing.
I have 2 girls myself and thankfully both are happy and healthy. I have so many videos of them growing up but I almost can't bear to watch them, they just change so much so quickly. I never considered myself overly emotional but these girls....man, it's tough!

I appreciate it and don't disagree; but we did back Madrid / Granada / Sevilla / Lagos / Lisbon into 13 days last year and it wasn't terrible. I like 3 nights at a spot, but would prefer to find a home base and hit some more sights if posisble.
Munich v Salzburg, I'm good to stay at either, I just definitely want to spend time in Salzburg and am flying out of Munich regardless.

Thanks everyone, lot to process here.
Is Croatia even worth the stop based on yalls experience? I have flights from London to DBV, but can shift gears and work our way to Munich in some other direction.
The only reason I had Zagreb was for ease of transport, trains from Split into Slovenia are tough to come by and seems like it was easier to get from Zagreb.
We did London - Belgium - and Paris in 2023, Spain/Portugal last year, so this is definitely going to be a different vibe. I preferred Spain and Portugal as it just was a more laid back time, but I don't want the kids (and my wife) to be bored.
ETA: I could shift to going from London to Prague, but read mixed reviews on Prague. Also, I could lop a few days off on the front end and go to the Cotswolds before flying into DBV.

Europe Suggestions - Croatia > Munich

Hi everyone. We are planning about a 20 day trip next year and I would love some input on the best spots to include and the best ways to get around.
We fly into London at the end of May and then fly to Dubrovnik a couple of days later. At the end of the trip we will fly home from Munich.
So the question is what to see in between Dubrovnik and Munich. Right now we are thinking about Dubrovnik, Split, maybe Zadar or Zagreb, then on to Slovenia for Ljubljana and Lake Bled, then on to Salzburg, and finally Munich. If Venice is worth mixing in I would consider that as well, I have been there but kids have not - so really looking at it, only for ease of transportation.
I would love ideas on the best route, how many nights in each place, and the easiest transportation options between these cities. We are a family of four with kids who travel well. We like a mix of relaxing coastal time, urban travel, and any cool nature stops.

Yeah, I totally agree and undestand that. I selfishly want more countries, it's stupid

The Moorish castle was cool as well, but i would have had a heart attack if my two kids were with me on that. You can walk anywhere you want there, and there were several places where you're walking on these steps that were only big enough for one person, yet there's people going up and down those steps, and the sides are barely even knee high, and if you go over them, you die. There's no way someone hasn't accidently died there goign over the edge.
The castle was great, but it did feel a a little unsafe. My wife was freaking when we were walking on those narrows sections with the kids.
