That's the actual headline from The Advocate.

Weird how this isn't a concern when Exxon, Entergy, Shaw/Brown and Root, Harmony, Turner, IBM, UPS, Georgia Pacific, Shell, Air Liquide, Associated Grocers, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cane's, BASF, OLOL, Kinder Morgan, Oschner, Shintech, Top Golf, Gerry Lane, Johnson Controls, FedEx Ground, CF Industries, DOW, Emerson, etc all compete in this labor market already.

Are they saying that Amazon is different from the above in that they hire slackers that would otherwise being hired by state or local government? Because that's what it sounds like

LINK

quote:

When state and local leaders announced last year that Amazon would build a $200 million, 3.8 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Baton Rouge, the higher-paying jobs for the 1,000-plus employees the online retailer is expected to hire was one of the benefits they touted the most.

But recently it has become a point of concern.

If Amazon is paying a minimum of $15 an hour plus benefits, that means its jobs will become the more attractive option for many in the workforce — especially those in the public sector like the East Baton Rouge Department of Public Works and the city-parish parks-and-recreation system.

quote:

According to previous reports, Amazon employees will receive comprehensive benefits on their first day — including medical, dental, vision, 401(K) savings with a 50% company match, along with 20 weeks paid maternity leave, six weeks of paid paternity leave and six weeks of leave for adoptive parents.

quote:

The city-parish's retirement benefits have been a draw in the past over its lower pay rates, but Gissel said things have changed and the new generation of workers aren't as concerned with long-term retirement benefits as they are about pay.

"Economically it's great for the market," Gissel said about Amazon's impending impact. "If we can generate and increase revenue that's always great for the whole economy. We're going to have to figure how we need to adapt to the changing work force."

Yes I'd agree that Amazon's investment into Baton Rouge is massive even by Amazon's standards. 3.8 million square feet and at least 1500+ direct workers is large for a city the size of Baton Rouge, and it is going to make the Amazon center at Cortana the largest in the state by far. It's definitely going to have an impact on low level wages and the regional labor. But that's not necessarily going to impact government employers.

The difference seems to be that Amazon actually needs to get things done. There is an expectation that their workers perform. It's night and day from local or state government. Amazon isn't going after the same caliber of employee. They are going to have a bigger impact on service industry jobs at restaurants or retail far more than local/state government.

Quote from Ron Swanson.

The government is a greedy piglet that suckles on a taxpayer's teat until they have sore, chapped nipples.

So the solution, from the governmental morons, will be to demand wage increases. Or...now hear me out. They could massively cut the ludicrous amount of state jobs and redirect some of those funds to merit raises.

I know, crazy talk.

So raising wages is bad?

Hey government, I wouldn’t mind paying people more if they are more effective/efficient.

Excellent point. Amazon sends out one employee on a truck. City parish sends 4. One to drive, one to work, 2 to stand around.

I'm sure they'll have plenty of security. Amazon has a similar facility in Bessemer, AL which isn't exactly Mayberry either

I work for a Government entity, our area got a big Amazon Warehouse, 2 things:

1) Unemployment is at a record low in the area, but pretty much every single "low paying job" is running on worst than a skeleton crew, like 1 Manager working at entire fast food store or 1 cook and 1 waiter at restaurants. A whole lot of these same people that were working these jobs 6 years ago are now working for Amazon.

2) The Government entity I work for is Municipal, we have a Parks and Rec department and Public Works department, like this article mentions. It is neigh impossible to find employment in the Parks and Rec Department (we have been at 25% staffed the last 2 years) and the Public Works Department (we have been at 45% staffed in the last 2 years). These positions are basically low level positions like a Fast Food restaurant or Walmart, but with way better benefits. It will hurt the Parks and Rec and Public Works - but just like my city has learned to cope, so will the other Government entities in Louisiana.

So long as you know what you're signing up for as far as the time demands for loading boxes, standing thru your shift, etc. Amazon seems like a great opportunity for a lot of people

Public sector BR needs the fricking competition.

A lot of the people in those jobs now are lazy frickers who got in because of various reasons outside of qualifications and can’t be fired.

If qualified people leave, it highlights the problems with the vast majority of the existing employees.

I am not at all saying that we couldn't cut the govt workforce in half, but as someone who did govt for a while, I can certainly say the govt benefits are garbage these days and private industry is paying almost double the govt rate.

Back in the day, the pension, days off, practically unlimited PTO were all worth lower pay as long as you were willing to be a lifer. Nobody wants to make half the pay now for almost the same benefits private industry is offering, and the draw of the pension is in the toilet bc they keep lowering the rate and extending the years to vest.

Certain number? Almost all government jobs are no work. And some are no show.

Any effective and efficient workers leave due to the dead weight of the bad ones. The civil service protections select for shitty workers at the expense of the good. The natural evolution of the any government organization will be to always have way more garbage workers than good.

15 an hour is what UPS starts at already. Amazon will probably pay upwards of 18-20

There are a small number of people doing the work.

When those people jump to another job or go on vacation, the house of cards tumbles.
