1) Commuter college where many can live at home while attending something with more university feel than a community college.

2) Large schools aren’t a great environment for many incoming college freshman.

3) LSU can be a big culture shock for some who come from Golden Meadow, Dulac, Napolenville and other surrounding smaller “bayou” towns.

3) It used to have a decent Nursing and Education department. Not sure if that’s still true.

not everyone needs to go to college. if these are major obstacles to you attending college, then maybe do without your general studies degree from nicholls

again the most irrelevant school in LA is SUNO.... There are no programs offered by SUNO that are not already offered at UNO(less than 3 minutes away or even delgado 12 minutes away. SUNO has the most lopsided graduation rate in the the state. It's purpose went away a very long time ago.

i was going to say something similar

if college is a big deal for you, moving an hour away isn't the end of the world. commuter schools should only be massive (20k+ enrollment) in urban areas

A small portion of Nichols' students commute FROM metropolitan New Orleans, sometimes on a daily basis. Same applies to SELU. The ones who live on-campus at these two like the quick drives home on the weekend or even a weeknight or they ARE "college material" but not suited to the crush of 30,000+ at LSU.

Shunting everyone to Baton Rouge does no one any favors. Same, now, for Lafayette as USL...sorry, UL is growing in numbers.

We should also privatize McNeese, LSU-A, Southern and Northwestern State

Actually, the former president of Nicholls suggested privatization because some state universities generate enough tuition income and self-generated funds that they have to pay the state some money back. Nicholls is one of those institutions.

Sorry about my gaffe on the athletic funding, I forgot that students paid fees for athletics. Anyway, that fee can be capitalized in the fact that if you are a student you get in free to athletic events with your student ID.

Also, the athletic fees at Nicholls were student assessed, which means the students voted for the athletic fees. So, it is essentially, no different than LSU students voting for the L-S-U lazy river student center instead of passing a student fee for a new library.

So students who don't want to go to large school and prefer to save money by living at home should not go to college?

Wut?

I trained for two good careers at Nicholls, so I'm happy it's there. When I first started going there after the plant I worked at closed during the early 80's recession, there was actually a bus which ran all the way from St. John Parish to Nicholls. Not sure I would have furthered my education if Nicholls wasn't there.

Especially with LSU requiring freshmen to live on campus, I think there is still place for some regional colleges.

I've had kids attend Nicholls, Southeastern and LSU, and Nicholls is above Southeastern in my opinion.

we have more than enough smaller schools to choose from if that's better suited for you. I'm not saying get rid of them all but consolidation is greatly needed and would lead to less redundant state funding. Kind of why I find all of the academics whining about the LSU facility upgrade funny, they don't want to address tightening their own belts.

but if commuting or living at home is a large issue for you, maybe try online college. Having a college near your hometown isn't some right.

This has to do more with the notoriously corrupt Louisiana politics that will never change.

Politics is the #1 reason why Louisiana is getting passed up and continues to be at the bottom of nearly ever poll, but I digress.

The HBCU’s will never be shut down (aside from maybe SUNO). Y’all can go ahead and book that.

And I agree with it. They serve a purpose, not for many of you, but for others.

They serve black folks. There’s a ton of history in HBCU’s.

You don’t have to like it, but they’ll never be shut down

To waste money

quote:

“Nationally, for all schools [black and white], the graduation rate is 60 percent,” Taylor said. “So, no one really is doing a good job.”
The graduation rate for HBCUs is only 35 percent, Taylor said. The journal reported that at half of the HBCUs surveyed, the black student graduation rate is 34 percent or lower. And there are seven HBCUs in which fewer than one in five black students earn a bachelor’s degree within six years.
