re: Looking forward to seeing how much Kelly and his staff improve vs a very physical Miss St

What's the saying, "It's not the big that eat the small, it's the fast that eat the slow"? I've
always liked that LSU usually has the aura of a speed team (even sometimes under Miles).
Of course, Physical is not necessarily the same as Big and some teams have speed and physicality. Florida State was that kind od team. Less hope Moo State isn't.

Malik Nabors is going to be drafted high. I don't follow college football in enough depth to know if there are 10 WR better than him, but it seems doubtful. Some team might take a flyer on JD thinking that if he washes out as QB, his talent might let them turn him into a RB or slot receiver type and use him as a special teams standout.

For me its definitely Rome. That was back before HBO figured out that expensive shows could be more than worth the money when they are excellent.
re: Band of Brothers and The Pacific are now on Netflix...

Dang, that's great news. Thanks for the heads up.
I actually have a set of Band of Brothers DVD's in really great tin, but I haven't had my DVD player hooked up in years, so this will be much more convenient.
For those who haven't watched The Pacific yet - it is good but a bit grittier and darker than BoB and since BoB is pretty much The Goat, Pacific doesn't quite reach those heights. On the plus side, Rami Malek steals the show as cajun Merill 'Snafu" Shelton in a brillant performance.

He might not want his Team USA experience being the latest thing on people's minds before the extension talks.
Dang, LSU is 2nd in the SEC in offensive yards per play.
Posted by Methuselah on 9/15/23 at 12:16 pm
That kind of takes me by surprise.
Of course, playing Grambling likely helped that. On the other hand, most or all of the SEC teams have played at least one cupcake, and at least LSU has played one legit team.
Fan Sided article
It's kind of an obscure stat, but with so many entities needing to find things to discuss, I guess you'll see everything over time.

I can also tell you that the vast majority of union reps(outside the company) that I have worked with are radical democrats with some being ardent communists.
I've always thought that unions were one of the things that prevented a real struggle between communism and capitalism in our country. Union members tend to be pretty conservative on many social issues. They just want their piece of the pie.
Back before they came about, things like sweat shops, company stores, scrip, child labor, etc were causing real divisions.
I think a relative balance between unions and companies, along with a free press are some of the things that make us unique.
Are they free from corruption? No. But then again, neither are businesses. Heck, all you have to do is read about the old captains of industry. And it exists down to the small entrepreneurs. It's human nature. It's like the old saying about watching sausage being made.
re: New BBC history show teaches children that Europeans have always been black
Posted by Methuselah on 9/14/23 at 11:01 am
I've always thought that biologically speaking, there is no such thing as race, at least in an accurately defining sense. If two individuals can reproduce and produce fertile offspring, they are the same species. Any differences after that are matters of speculation. For instance, how is the term 'black' defined in the article linked in the OP? If I remember, there were and probably still are different definitions in our own history. Mostly to suit the purposes of the person doing the defining.
How many different haircut styles have you baws and bawettes rocked over the years?
Posted by Methuselah on 9/14/23 at 6:17 am
Have you stuck with the same bowl cut or flattop since the first time you sat on the barber chair's child booster seat? Or have you evolved as some of the subsequent styles came into and out of fashion?
I usually keep the same style which is a side part when first cut. If I'm delayed in getting back to the cutters, I may go to a center part until I can get there.
Looking at old pictures, looks like my parents started me off with a crew cut, then went with the combed back Brylcream, Vitalis, VO5 look. (young me looked pretty sharp with the slicked back look). I even tried a mullet very briefly when groups like The Cars were big. Been pretty steady with the standard cut, though.
After losing it all in chemo, I let it grow back and went back to the standard cut. Surprisingly I had less rather than more scattered gray hairs,

We'd pull up a rug and a pillow on the tile floor, cover with a blanket, turn the channels manually, sprinkle some extra sugar on our frosted flakes, and enjoy the cartoons.
Sunday mornings were Japanese monster movies and space adventures. Depending on what time we went to mass, wed miss the end of a lot of movies.

Judging by those pics, she wears way too much clothes.
Sexy as hell in the green tank top, though.

Nash Roberts- Weatherman
When Nash stepped down from TV, I think he opened up a weather consulting firm. Probably advising manufacturing plants, oil field companies, and other entities about storms and hurricanes that were approaching. Also I think they did some forensic work as expert witnesses providing air modelers with weather conditions at the time of chemical releases for use in the dispersion models.

Normally, we would blast someone for this, but you have enough gravitas on the board that it's fine. Could have gone with the invest number or whatever they call them while they're forming instead of "Future Hurricane Nigel", though.

There are plenty of places not named Louisiana with good public schools. Or you could drop some OT money and send your kids to boarding school
This. If the majority of people who send their kids to Catholic and other private schools would all send their kids to public school, and get involved with the school, they could have quality public education.
Of course, I understand why any individual parents wouldn't want to be the lead cases and send their kids to public schools as they are now constituted. It would have to be a mass movement, at least in each district.
The movement towards magnet and STEM schools have helped some. Charter schools are a mixed bag so far IMO and the jury is still out on them.

Little bit of a nostalgia thread. For me it was:
Local:
News: Alec Gifford with his slicked back hair.
Sports: The immortal Buddy Diliberto and Hap Glaudi. I remember reading that when the Saints had training camp at (I think) Southeastern that Buddy would sleep in and do his segments and interviews wearing a suit jacket and tie and pajama bottoms and they would shoot him from the chest up.
Weather: Al Duckworth. I would say Nash Roberts, but I don't know if I'm remembering his regular newscasts or when they'd bring him back for hurricanes.
National:
News: Walter Cronkite. A legend.
Sports: The one and only Howard Cossel.
Weather: I don't really remember them having national weathermen before Al Roker.

Nice work. Good to see you do one of the good guy's machines. (Though to be honest, I really like the Axis ones you make as well).
re: SiriusXM recap show was talking about Saban
Posted by Methuselah on 9/10/23 at 5:11 pm
Saban is one of the best coaches of all time. I'll always appreciate that he righted the ship at LSU. Age gets us all eventually if we live long enough. Hopefully he has enough tine left after he does step down to enjoy life.
Yet another take on Daniels/Nussmeier. (Hopefully a kinda unique one).
Posted by Methuselah on 9/10/23 at 7:33 am
It's obvious that the coaches have decided that going with Daniels is the best option. Perhaps they think that he has the higher floor, while Nussmeier may have a higher ceiling, but perhaps a lower floor.
Here is where I differ from most: If they are going to go with Daniels, I think they should gear the offense to his strengths which are running and improvising. Everyone keeps saying he needs to try to improve his passing game by throwing into tighter windows, throwing downfield more, and throwing more and running less.
I disagree. The team needs to maximize what he does best - run. Put in a few more designed running plays for him. I'm not saying go to a full-blown option offense but utilize more option concepts. And quit trying to get him to go against his instincts by going through more progressions. If he thinks he needs to run to salvage a play, let him go with that feeling before it's too late.
I've even thought that they good experiment with putting both Nussmeier and Daniels in the backfield together once in a while. You'd have a strong passing and a strong running threat.
