The bayou region needs to have something for higher education. I am all for closing down a lot of schools in this state but this isn't one of them

1) Commuter college where many can live at home while attending something with more university feel than a community college.

2) Large schools aren’t a great environment for many incoming college freshman.

3) LSU can be a big culture shock for some who come from Golden Meadow, Dulac, Napolenville and other surrounding smaller “bayou” towns.

3) It used to have a decent Nursing and Education department. Not sure if that’s still true.

And yet... Nicholls is ranked higher than SELA in the US News and World Report Rankings (Southern Regional Rankings).

It blows my mind how people pump up Southeastern as some sort of “good” school. Whoever their marketing people are... LSU should hire them. Because all I ever hear about Southeastern is people trying to convince themselves that it’s the next best thing to LSU in Louisiana.

Southeastern is Nicholls-tier. Actually below Nicholls. Why is Southeastern a thing, then?

That's why nothing will ever get done. The whole state feels that way about their local school. Close the other guy down. It's like Americans hating Congress but loving their Congressman because "he brings home the bacon." TBH the state could survive without Northwestern but I would hate to lose it.

Apparently not.

ETA: I went from the city to having been lived in Thibodaux for 10 years now. No way I’d move back to that shithole.

I think the bigger issue is that they do not want to deal with the political fallout of shutting down HBU's

There are many schools in this state that need to be closed.

Nichols is one of them.

Possibly so depending on the criteria chosen. It is not one I'd put on the chopping block right away.

Nursing and Surveying programs are pretty good.

These are needed.

But I think it should turn into a 2yr school with more integration with the local technical school.

A lot of ppl do all their pre-reqs here before going to LSU, ULL, etc. Saves 2yrs of housing costs on parents.

I expect more from someone of your intelligence Scruffy.

Louisiana needs a Trump-type governor to get it done. Someone whose willing to sacrifice their political career (or has none) to withstand the backlash.

Honestly an easier method would be privatized HBCU. Think Oakwood University in Alabama.

I challenge someone who feels that LA has too many colleges to look at other states and realize that they have just as many campuses per region as Louisiana.

They may not field athletic teams, but they do have multiple college campuses across a state and count total enrollment as one number.

The biggest example and closest to us would be USM’s Gulf Coast Campus in Long Beach.

Also, if you look at Mississippi, look at the number of community colleges they have, and most have athletic teams with some having expensive sports like football.

Louisiana has 173 college campuses
Massachusetts has 211
Florida 439
California 1243
Connecticut 114
Illinois 391
District of Columbia 33

Doesn't seem like Louisiana has too many compared to other states. Some smaller

Nichols is fine. Lots of other schools should be closed before them. It serves the bayou region, the John Folse school is very good and well respected, good nursing school, MBA program is pretty good, athletics are picking up a bit...leave it be. As mentioned, LSU and ULL satellite campuses don’t seem necessary. Could also argue Southeastern given its proximity to LSU and even New Orleans universities.

Per Wiki, there are 17 distinct public universities in LA.

That does not include the public community/technical schools.

Not counted are the private schools, seminaries, or for-profit schools.

For such an educated population, we sure are dumb in how we manage upper education. Easily half the 17 universities could be shuttered- not combined with other schools, but CLOSED.

Want to fix the state budget, start there.
-three university systems? Wow
-two HBC's? Why? At one point they served a purpose but that time has passed. Let them go to regular universities where they will get a better education and their students likely will actually graduate. Close at least one of them
-let each school have the athletics support themselves, freeing up money to go to academics. Isn't that the point anyway?

Close all public universities except LSU (the flagship obviously), LA Tech (to serve north Louisiana), and UNO (to serve New Orleans area). Done.
