Parkinson’s and heart disease are very often due to the person’s life choices

Addiction is not a disease, it's a fricking choice people make. I propose I could be around hard core drug addicts or alcoholics for weeks at a time and I'll not catch their "Disease".
The only reason addictions and other issues are called diseases is because of the medical professions.
I was around drunks, druggies, and stoners since I was 12. I chose to quit drinking at 21, and had the "immunity" to the other 2 "diseases".
It's called willpower and determination and the inspiration to fight the fight.

Blows my mind most drinkers don’t make this connection.

They made a choice to do drugs or to drink themselves into oblivion. They didn't spend a night out in bad weather, caught a cold that turned into addiction. They made the choice to pop pills, snort chemicals, shoot crap into their veins or consume far more alcohol for more often than most other people.
Could not possibly agree more. If they hadn’t made the absolutely retarded decision to do meth or heroin or crack, they wouldn’t be addicted to it. It IS their fault. It IS a choice they made. If they hadn’t ANY reason to believe they had a predisposition to addiction and did it anyway, they are extra stupid.

You may have somewhat of a point overall, but this is just retarded.

I think the human brain seeks out balance. I’ve known (including my own brother) several addicts. The pattern seems to be that those who are depressive seek out cocaine, meth, etc. Something to help lift or speed them up. Those I know that struggle with ADHD/anxiety reach for alcohol, pot, shrooms, other mood depressants to get relief from racing thoughts and the stress it causes
Maybe this is just a few anecdotal examples but it makes sense to me.

Was their disease any less impactful to them because "you didn't think it was a disease"?
Look, I'm not denying that there are diseases that are not contagious like the ones you have mentioned, but to call drug addiction or alcoholism a disease is just downright laughable.

Agree, addiction is a choice. Your will to drink over rides your will to not drink.
The will is inside you, you need strengthen that will and act upon it.

I drink to forget, but I can’t remember what

I feel sorry for people who don't drink because, when they wake up in the morning, that's the best they are going to feel all day.

I think it got lost somewhere in people saying addiction is disease like, to just saying it’s a disease.
It is very disease like, but I agree it is not a disease.

Isn’t that true of diseases in general? Identifying and classifying them is a huge part of what the medical profession does.

Because if you sought mental health or trauma help in the military up until recently, your clearance was revoked. So you drink to deal with it. Quietly. You learn to hide the drinking just as well as you do your personal issues. Eventually you become an alcoholic.

We have a first cousin who has enjoyed alcohol since he was 14 (according to him). He's now retired, has been caught DUI, says he's an alcoholic and sees no reason to stop drinking. He was sober for three weeks (in jail) and says he tried sobriety there and didn't like it. He has serious medical problems, he can't plan ahead successfully, and the only place he knows to meet women are bars.
My husband doesn't understand him at all, I loathe him as a waste of oxygen and my husband's listening to his phone calls (Up to five a day when he's drunk early.) Thank heavens he lives a seven hour drive away. And for a year his probation means he can't leave that state.

I've struggled with those issues completely sober. Alcohol 100% helps take the edge off if consumed in moderation.

quote:I understand your point. Alcoholism isn’t like leprosy. But you’re loading the word “disease” with a requirement it doesn’t have: that the person suffering from it did nothing to contribute to it.
Look, I'm not denying that there are diseases that are not contagious like the ones you have mentioned, but to call drug addiction or alcoholism a disease is just downright laughable.
Britannica defines “disease” as “an abnormal condition that harms the body or mind and stops it from working normally.” There is no language requiring the person suffering to be blameless. Does drinking to the point of addiction produce an abnormal condition that harms the body or mind and stops it from working normally? Absolutely. What about that makes the classification laughable?
Your objection confuses a medical classification with a moral judgment. Smoking can cause lung cancer, and lifestyle choices can contribute to heart disease and hypertension. Those conditions don’t stop being diseases because someone’s behavior helped cause them. Why would alcoholism operate under a different rule?
Calling alcoholism a disease doesn’t absolve someone of responsibility for their drinking, their behavior, or seeking treatment. It simply identifies the condition. You can hold someone accountable without redefining words to mean something that fits your world view better.

This is exactly why a ton of alcoholics classify it as a “disease”
