Ive never understood...probably because no one can explain it well...why people with traumas or mental health issues drink heavily and become alcoholic. It solves nothing and ruins them further. But they keep on going with nothing improving. Makes no absolute sense at all.

I’m just so sick and tired of those butter knives, so it lead me to drinking

To numb their pain. Addiction is a horrible disease that does not discriminate.

Ive had mental health issues...I just know eroh wont change the circumstances that caused the issue.

Numb...it might for an hour but that does nothing.

Guess I'll juat have to decide that I'll never understand this.

This silly statement gets under my skin----probably more than it should, but it gets there anyway.

Addiction is not a disease, it's a fricking choice people make. I propose I could be around hard core drug addicts or alcoholics for weeks at a time and I'll not catch their "Disease".

They made a choice to do drugs or to drink themselves into oblivion. They didn't spend a night out in bad weather, caught a cold that turned into addiction. They made the choice to pop pills, snort chemicals, shoot crap into their veins or consume far more alcohol for more often than most other people.

Oh and adding this, so let more downvotes commence.

Calling an addiction a disease is just a life line for those who can't take responsibility for the condition they find themselves in as addicts.

I agree with you.

At some point you do make a conscious choice to become an addict. Once you’re an addict, different story, I can see how it’s hard to quit, but you have to develop an addiction.

No excuse really. Especially from the “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” crew here

Well if everyone had the same experiences as you then I guess we’d have no alcoholics.

Your experience is not everyone else’s.

People naturally search out what makes them happy or comforts them. I have no problem with a jack and diet coke after a stressful day. Some folks can't stop, though. Just like drugs, gambling and hoes

I had bad ptsd from the fire service. I no longer drink fwiw. There is no doubt childhood issues that can be tied in but military and first responder life can exacerbate that significantly. I got depressed and stopped sleeping. I’d usually go 48 hours at a time without sleeping, sleeping meds did nothing besides Xanax. After several years living like that I picked up a bottle and had a couple drinks, slept like a baby every night I was off. Then it took more and more, got up to 1/5 a night, off duty of course. I would lay awake at night with a clouded head constantly worried about work, started thinking my kids or wife will soon have the same fate that I see at work, drinking simply depressed those thoughts and I slept, sure no rem but still fell asleep. It was a dark time no doubt, I’m good now.

In normal life, you get positive impulses of dopamine from daily activities (work, chores, any successes) So most can do that and be successful thru the satisfaction of those daily accomplishments.

Many addicts only get that feeling thru the false euphoria of drugs or alcohol, and think they can maintain it thru more use.

Im not an alcoholic, but i think i might make an old fashion, just from talking about this, lol

I actually think most people make too much of the whole “self medicating” thing. I personally like to get fricked up on occasion simply because I enjoy it. I find the feeling to be pleasant.

Well said. It is well known that any pathology must be transmissible in order for it to be classified as a disease.
