There is a commercial on WWL constantly about a timeshare cancellation business. Can't think of the name right now but he must be doing pretty well. To me that's a reason for a big no thank you.

“The only gangsters here are those timeshare folks at the airport.”
- our cab driver in Cabo a few years ago.
But there were plenty of people at those booths nodding and reviewing papers, right off the plane.

My cousin has one in Cancun. They swap out their ts to other people who have ts in other areas. They have gone to Hawaii, Acapulco, Bermuda, etc.
I can go to Cancun, Hawaii, Acapulco, Bermuda, etc., without wasting money on a timeshare.

The only time I hear of timeshares is during commercials for programs to help one get out of them. With all the bad publicity, I am shocked these even exist anymore.
I have clients that call me about 3-4x a year asking how to get out of them. All kinds of horror stories.

I used to own two Disney contracts. We sold a few years ago and doubled our money on both.

I believe the Disney Vacation Club is actually not a horrible deal. Other timeshares? Maybe so.
Just think. Disney is a reputable company, surely they would not ruin it over a program like this.
I really considered it last year while I was at Disney. Me and my wife are in our mid-20s and while she loves Disney more than I do, I dont really mind it that much. I suspect we will be going more when we start having kids.
The package we would have bought was around 50,000 which would have given us 2 weeks at any resort or 1 week at a resort like Grand Floridian each year.
The 50k covered a week in Disney each year for the rest of our lives. We will probably spend 50k going to Disney by the time we are 35 years old. Each time we go, we spend around 5k-8K. After we pay off the trip, we will be going to Disney for a very reduced cost each year (as they have fees as well).

The only good time share I've heard of was a bunch of dentists who set up a non-profit, bought two condos and they manage it on their own.

A coworker and her husband bought into a few years ago and always are sure to drop it into a conversation whenever we go to dinner with them and someone new to the group is there. They make decent money but are the definition of keeping up with the Jones's. Our daughter rides horses so they signed theirs up. Another is in gymnastics so they do the same.
They bought a jeep with a huge lift on it because 2 others had them. But they only had 4 matching wheels with a 5th design on the spare "because the dealer only had 4 in stock" lol
They sent everyone videos taking it "mudding" with them filming each other driving through a 6" deep mud puddle doing about 10mph
That's the kind of people that buy timeshares lol

My wife and I bought one in 2003. We did plenty of research first and found one with low maintenance fees in Orlando. It took about 5 years to break even. While the kids were young, we were doing 3 weeks a year at condos all over the country. Averaging around $500-$600 per week at 2-3 bedroom condos. We were saving money. Maintenance fees recently went up and we are only using 2 weeks a year. We are breaking even basically now compared to airbnb or vrbo. If you just want to go to Destin or Disney once a year, it doesn't make sense. You have to plan ahead and work to make your investment work for you. We are planning type people so it doesn't bother us. Once maintenence fees go up again, we are going go have to get out.

A Disney timeshare
Massive oof
It's actually worse than that. When you hear about Disney timeshares, it's usually properties that are not connected to Disney. So, even if you get it with the intent of going to Disney with the kids/grandkids (my parents), you still need to have a car with you to get to the properties and you don't get any discounts/perks for staying on property.
It's starting to make a little more sense now that they have grandkids into Universal; but for awhile it was such a hassle. The funniest part was when they offered it to my wife & I and told us to pay the fee so they can book the extra room. Wife showed them it was actually cheaper and way more convenient (when Disney had the bus to bring you from the airport) to stay at one of the All-Star resorts. We haven't; been asked to go back since

Word to the wise for anyone whose parents or in-laws have one: most of the time, these things become part of the estate when the owner dies, and someone WILL inherit it. There is a way to get out of that, but it’s something you’re probably going to have to deal with.

I understand the Disney hate, but if you have a wife and kids that love it, they were a great investment. The secret was to buy them on the secondary market, as Disney has a ROFR that created a floor. If you bought in the 2008-2010 timeframe, the purchase price has doubled or tripled.
