I am sure that's easier said than done. They have no idea when the government will open back up. It could be later today, it could be 3 weeks from now. That leaves them in a predicament.
There will be some jobs they will not get hired for because the person doing the hiring doesn't want to hire someone who could work two days then have to quit.
We are talking about people who work for the coast guard, Secret Service, FBI agents, people who work for the National Weather Service, etc. Is a FBI going to go apply for a part-time job, fill out the application and put "currently a FBI agent. Will be available to work until federal gov shutdown is over".

Many federal workers are prohibited from getting secondary income outside of their federal job at risk of losing their job. There are some exceptions, some just need permission.

My old lady is a federal worker and she hasn’t been able to go to the nail salon since the shutdown. It really is terrible

Has any banks been offering low to no interest short term loans for furloughed workers?

Imagine if all teachers or construction workers or pilots were out of work for an extended period of time..... Percentages of any group of people would issues. Some will have adequate savings. Many won't. I would never criticize because I can empathize with them. I have savings and I could go quite a while, but it sucks to think about putting myself in that position.

This line of thinking requires actual logical thought and you should know better than to expect that around here.

You could just drive for uber for 20 hours a week and at least make a few hundred dollars. Cut back on your expenses and hustle for what you can and you'd make out alright. It's quite obvious that it's not an ideal situation for anyone, but the people sitting at home doing nothing aren't helping themselves.

I think there are several banks and credit unions, Navy Federal being one, that are offering no interest loans up to a certain dollar amount.
I’m fortunate that I have a year’s worth of salary saved as well as my Air Force retirement to lean on so, money wise, the furlough isn’t affecting me like it is others. I am empathetic toward those who are struggling right now due to missing two pay checks. I also don’t blame them for not seeking other employment because who is going to hire someone not knowing when the furlough is going to be over?

My wife's best friend is a furloughed federal worker.
She bought a one way ticket with points to Thailand and is just chilling there until this thing ends.

The biggest reason for the crying, is the 6figure making government workers, who have been living high off the hog, and now after spending to keep up with the guy next door, they cannot afford a candy bar.
Some of the richest areas are around DC, and many are making their money from government, or off the government via contracts.
Buddy lives in Fairfax, Virginia, and 2/3rd of the people in his area are government workers, making nice cashola.
One thing this stoppage has done, is show that a lot of people aren't needed.

I had a usda employee tell me that they would be fined up to $5k for showing up for work during the downturn.

varies by department. DOI policy is you can have secondary income as long as it is not from "prohibited" source, which is a job that may have a connection to what you do in your job or what your office does for the department. Even these can be approved by supervisors as long as it's not too bad.
Most if not all Federal employees can get jobs that aren't connected to their job. For instance, I'm making 16/hour scanning papers and organizing files in a medical setting
Sure it sucks, I'm making wayyyyy less money doing something unrelated to my job, but it beats sitting at home not doing anything and complaining about it.

Most of the people you hear about bitching aren't the ones making six figures. Its the prison workers, TSA, forestry etc. that don't make anywhere near that much. It is way to easy to shite on government workers but a ton of people in most lines of work would be in the same position if they had to miss two paychecks.
But hey they these people work for the government and I don't like the government so frick'em regardless of the reality. I think I did it right.

Because many of the workers are being required to work and still missing their paychecks. It's hard to get a temporary job or even part time job while having to work a full time job as well. Sure, they will get paid when the shutdown ends, but that could be a week or 3 months. At what point is someone supposed to give up on a job/career then go settle for a lesser job when this shite could end in a week?
I could personally miss several paychecks and be fine. But that isn't the case for everyone. What I couldn't do is just go out and get a part time job without hiring a babysitter. I have small kids at home. it's doubtful that my "temporary, part-time job" would cover much more than the babysitter.
