re: What is the logic with not getting over in the right lane

On 4 lane roads that are not limited access, such as interstate, I finally figured out that a lot of these people are going to turn left somewhere in the next 5 miles and can't handle the stress of merging into the left lane in that half mile before their turn.

The law says stay in the right lane unless overtaking and passing a vehicle. You aren't overtaking a vehicle when you are a 1/4 mile behind it.

Suffering consequences has nothing to do with free will.

Being a FF/EMT since 18, I was used to driving ambulances and fire apparatus code 3 in heavy traffic. I used to drive like a bat out of hell when I was a teenager and into my early twenties because I "know how to drive." Living in NY and DFW during those times, I was an extremely aggressive driver. My wife(no pics) is a former cop and took similar EVOCs. We also both know what can happen and why it's just not worth it. Years of seeing fatal consequences or hearing the excuses of survivors shows you it's not just coincidence or "wrong place at the wrong time." Its an overall attitude that people think they're more important and find out the hard way they aren't as good as they think they are.

Now having two small children, those few minutes gained are definitely not worth it.

I don't carry a gun in the car because I might use it. I have road rage and I really shouldn't but people are so stupid when driving.

My theory is people love being in their cars a lot more than I do and do not care if they get somewhere quickly. Like, "I paid for this car, insurance, tag, gas, upgrades and I'm going to enjoy it", then pull up to their government housing.

1,320 feet. Thats around 3.67 football fields with the end zones or over 4 without the end zones, and if object standing still it would take around 12 to 13 seconds to reach it at 70mph making overtaking a vehicle moving 3 or 4 mph slower more math than I can handle but would likely take 3 or 4 minutes. It definitely would be wrong as driver wouldn’t be technically be passing anyone for a couple of minutes with a lot of room to get over, but it also seems like the distance could be exaggerated some.

Did you stay behind the car for 3 or 4 minutes, or Did you pass on the right (not that you should have had to do that if next truck was 1/4 of a mile away)?

If someone is actually passing vehicles I believe the faster vehicles behind that driver can wait until passing current cars and when it’s safe to move into the right lane as most laws just require the vehicle to be passing other vehicles while using left lane, but I don’t think that was what was described in OP.

The only reason I'll not get over is if someone climbs right on my arse. Respect me enough to not ride a handspan off my bumper and I'll even speed up to get over sooner.

It's all about a lack of awareness and social graces.

i drove the hell that is I85 from Spartanburg to Charlotte today......it wasn't just truckers, it was yankee subaru drivers. there is no excuse for staying in the right lane, even if you are going 80, and someone is behind you.....gtfover to right lane.



I 95 is different. It is full of immigrant semi drivers in the left lane at 65 in a damn 70. should be give a ticket for that.

I love her. I would kill for her.

But if you see her on highway doing this, road rage her. I will giggle.

She has already been warned by me.

By that logic, the 4 cars going faster than the driver you mention should also get over then pass again when they get to the vehicle ahead. They won’t though.

This is my philosophy.
If I’m already going 80-85 in the left lane, and I can see another truck in the right lane 100 yards away, going slow, I’m not getting back into the right lane so the person behind me can go 90. They’re just gonna have to wait.

To me, It’s less dangerous than constantly passing and getting over. Usually the person that gets back over right after passing will get trapped there again, get pissed off, throw on his blinker and jet out in front of someone doing 80 in the left lane to pass again. And do this over and over.. when they could have just judged the stretch correctly that they would be in the left lane.

I only get back in the right lane when I have a lot of runway, or the person in the right lane is driving at a steady pace faster than me.
