Eye-ber-ville is how they say it in New Orleans, because they're pretentious asses. Notice how they pronounce everything without acknowledging its heritage?

The NOLA pronunciation conventions are sort of the opposite of pretentiousness, historically speaking. It was likely the big wave of poor Irish immigrants in the mid 19th century who set the current jacked up pronunciations of street names in place.

I always heard it as a soft i, as in "it", so that's how I say it. With that said, if you used English pronunciation conventions, a vowel followed by a single consonant should be pronounced as a hard vowel, which would make it "eye". And with that said, the French pronunciation of I would be a hard "E" sound.

So take your pick, as there ain't no real right answer

There's a town in Wyoming named Dubois. Up there they pronounce it Dew-boys.

How about “Lacassine, LA” while on pronunciation subject.

I have driven I-10 to/from LA/TX more than I care to count. Never stopped in Lacassine. Never heard it pronounced.

Learn me.

In fairness, and as a little historical tidbit, W.E.B. Du Bois pronounced his name dew-boys and not dew-bwa, like most people assume. Could be the same kinda thing.

I always said it with a short "I" (Ibber-ville as opposed to eye-ber-ville), but I'm not from New Orleans area. Julien on YouTube backs this pronunciation up.

A-mit or A-meet? I have no idea how locals pronounce Amite City, but I have never heard a river rat pronounce the river anything other than A-meet.

Some of the old locals that live in the country say A-mit, everyone else says A-meet.

Iberville was French. The French pronunciation is ee-ber-veel, but I wouldn't pronounce it like this unless I wanted a broken jaw and a beer thrown on me.

The correct pronunciation is Ih ber ville, not Eye ber ville but if you try to pronounce it like that in New Orleans you will be “corrected “. Like Calliope has to rhyme with cantaloupe.

Why even make an attempt?

You are better off asking how to pronounce Hebert and Cheniere up here in our neck of the woods.

Long e sound in the beginning.
