It amazes me the attitude that modern Americans, especially southerners, have towards the french. There is no USA without the french, we'd still be spending money with Queen Elizabeth on it without them. They are our oldest allies.

A long time ago, the British and French were at War. During one battle, the French captured an English major. They took the major to their headquarters and a French general began to question him.
The French general asked 'why do you English officers all wear red coats? Don't you know the red material makes you easy targets for us to shoot?'.
In his bland English way, the major informed the general that the reason English officers wear red coats is so that if they are shot, the blood won't show and the men they are leading won't panic.
And that is why from that day to now, all French army officers wear brown pants.

The French probably have the greatest collective military history of any nation in the world.

The French were the best army in the world for about 180 years. The US, in contrast, has been the best for about 110 years.

The French fought their balls off in ww1 and ww2
WW1 yes but Not so much ww2. They collapsed in front of the German invasion, and in many cases stacked their guns before there were Germans in the area. Then there was the Vichy thing too.

France as some form of cohesive entity stretches back some 1500 years. There isn't a nation on earth that can match their line up of leaders, battles, etc.:

Americans really don’t know what true sacrifices other countries made during the world wars. They assume everyone else just stood around jacking off while ‘merica saves the day

That's a dumb take. The French forces were known to be bad asses. Their leadership was arrogant and made some bad strategic moves like under-estimating the German's willingness to gamble. It wasn't for lack of fighting ability.

Over 85k Frenchmen died in six weeks of fighting before they surrendered. In comparison the US lost 58k in all of Vietnam and 7k in Iraq/Afghanistan

What does seem to rankle many WWII historians is the way De Gaulle did the tuck and run and then marched down the streets of Paris after the US liberated them.
