My nominees are the South Vietnamese. We essentially fought the war for them, and they still gave up.

(My opinion is probably tarnished from personal experience. I was an artillery battery commander, one of the first deployed during the build-up.)

IIRC the GIGN still train our SWAT team members.

This whole "French are pussies" meme started because they didn't want to help us invade Iraq which turned out to be a boondoggle anyway.

The French felt they were protected from the German advance by the Maginot Line until the German's basically drove around it and stormed their asses. Their underground resistance still managed to fight honorably throughout occupation.

It amazes me the attitude that modern Americans, especially southerners, have towards the french. There is no USA without the french, we'd still be spending money with Queen Elizabeth on it without them. They are our oldest allies.

I bet if you asked the average person 30 or under where the Statue of Liberty came from they couldn't answer.

Modern Americans? Sure. But Americans of that time were even less sensitive to casualties then the French.

America was last to the party in both world wars.

How many times do we have to do this thread? A little bit of independent research can save some of you from making these blatantly ignorant remarks.

Not weak - they simply made what turned out to be the right decision when Hitler's forces invaded during WWII. They had lost a tremendous number of young men during WWI, and after attempting to fight the Nazi's they saw an easy way out. They had very few men of draft age in 1940 due to losses in WWI. Surrender before they lost most of their troops and perhaps the Nazi's wouldn't destroy most of France. Then wait for help from the rest of the Allies.

If you take a tour of France, primarily Normandy and Alsace, and you visit some of the small towns, the locals will generally tell you that the military leaders were generally inept, but their decision to lay down their arms spared them greater losses.

Were they really that pussified, or did they just not give a shite about whether they lived under a capitalist dictatorship or a communist dictatorship?

Don’t forget in 1099 an Army of French knights marched from France to freaking Jerusalem to reclaim the Holy Land, while capturing major cities and creating crusader states along the way.

No, but they deserve some shite talk for barely lasting as long as Poland against Germany. They were supposed to be the big dogs, and shite the bed.

My wifes grandfather would say so. He told it over and over. “Had it not been for us, the french would be goose steppin right now”. Said we pushed the Germans back to Paris for the french and then allowed the french to get a participation trophy and take back paris “on their own” ha

My grandfather was 907th glider battalion and I count myself very fortunate to have spent time with him growing up and hear some of his stories. He participated in a very collectible book about glider pilots in WWII. I can't recall him ever criticizing any of the allied forces. The only thing I remember him getting animate about was field Marshall Montgomery who he didn't care for. Montgomery was the master mind for operation Market Garden but the Brits weren't able to take down the bridge assigned to them.

Wish I could sit down and talk with that man about what's happening in the world today.

At times they've had weak leadership. We've all gone through it, at one time or another.

Spinoff to the French bulldog attack thread.

Other than during the days of Napoleon, are the French historically the world’s biggest pussies?

France is literally the most successful military power in European history

quote:

France has participated in 50 of the 125 major European wars fought since 1495, and in 168 battles fought since 387 BC, they have won 109, drawn 10 and lost 49: this makes France the most successful military power in European history

Yes, France laid down during WWII, but that was largely due to battle fatigue from the slaughterhouse they endured from 1914-1918. Prior to WWII they were THE power in europe

Captains don't get involved in the politics of why you are being shot at. Fortunately, while I was there, we were still allowed to shoot back.
