Always as bad? This is probably the best the state has been in 100 years.
The public schools used to be worse. The crime used to be worse. The oil bust was absymal. The corruption was much, much worse.
We have progressed to the point where we are only 20-25 years behind the rest of the country... used to be like 40.

I travel the country constantly and I’ve yet to see these meccas of awesomeness people always allude to. Iowa? Give me a break. Bland food and boring honkies. Much of Louisiana is certainly a shithole. But unless you are some broke dick you can insulate yourself from much of the shittyness Louisiana has to offer, if you’re so inclined. What I’m saying is I like to see homos naked. I mean home is where you make it.

Our highways are cleaner than any state I drove through. They are significantly smoother than all I drove through. Law enforcement in Kentucky, Ohio, PA, and NY were brutally incompetent at directing traffic around an accident. Hospitality businesses in every state I went to were rude, incompetent, or both.
I got bad news for you, when it comes to doing alright, Louisiana is fine as always.

I don't think there's been any seismic changes in for who knows how long. I would simply point out:
a) It's pretty hard to go bad-wrong in America unless you're stuck in some inner-city type place.
b) LA has lots of ok, if not good places to live, even if none are out-n-out great places to live.

No doubt, but as someone who regularly drives through our (supposedly poor) neighboring states, MS and AR, our roads are worse and our law enforcement is ever present. I can drive from Lafayette to McComb and see 15 officers. I can drive from McComb to Memphis and see maybe 2 officers. Hell, I've driven from Lafayette to Rogers, AR and never saw a cop once I crossed the line into AR.

I've been many other places and lived on the east coast for the first 20 years of my life. Compared to Louisiana, most other places are so bland. People here just love life (yes there is also higher crime). People love to bitch but honestly if you take things into your own hands then a lot of the problems aren't really as big as people make them seem. To been going downhill since the 60s. It wasn't too bad in the 70s but started fading quickly in the 80s
Probably related to the kinds of industry. Old southern towns had saw mills and were more self sufficient. As that died off, retail took over as the industry of small town La, interstates opened the country up and brain drain occurred.
It wasn't a bad place for me to grow up for sure.

Yep, quality of life is what you make it to be. Most things people complain about are things they just read on Reddit of somewhere else. I didn't dislike La as much as most people who post here. Sure it has issues but every place does.

New Orleans was the ONLY city in the south prior to WWII. After WWII, the rest of the south boomed. Louisiana went backwards. Corrupt gov't, poor work ethic of the population, and pride in ignorance are strong here!
The last 40 years have seen Louisiana decline as the rest of the south booms. We celebrate Mardi Gras, food, and drink. We promote a party lifestyle to draw tourism and start believing the story ourselves. It's MUCH worse now than the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Without natural resources (oil, sugar, Mississippi River, deep water ports etc) we would be Haiti

I don't either. LA certainly has a its issues but I've been to a lot of other places that I disliked more. Granted that's pretty subjective.

One thing that I've noticed living all around the country is that the rural South and Appalachia was real, real rough compared to the rural Midwest, rural West, and rural Northeast. Driving across rural Michigan or rural Wisconsin o rural Colorado is like night and day compared to rural Georgia or Louisiana or Kentucky. It kind of startled me the first time I drove through rural Wisconsin how well-taken care of things are there.
The cities and suburbs tend to be fairly similar in my opinion in quality of life all across the country (with some major outliers in either direction like Detroit or New York).
That's changed a little bit in the last ten years as rural areas across the country have dipped all across the board, but I think it's still noticeable.

No simple answers to that. Some things were better but only marginally and most were the same or worse. Go back far enough (within my lifetime, I'm 56) and I'm pretty sure it was way worse for black folks.
These indicators they use to compare the states will hit those things that really hurt Louisiana. Poor overall quality of education, horrible fiscal management, crumbling infrastructure now that federal monies are dwindling, high crime rates in the most populous areas.
Interestingly, these types of comparisons that use different indicators to supposedly chart happiness always rate Louisiana high.
People here tend to enjoy gathering together, the people are generally friendly, even to strangers (that is different than most places I've traveled in the course of my profession) and the food, in general, is better here than just about anywhere (at least South Louisiana).
I could live other places but I do like Louisiana.

Corruption wise? Yes
New Orleans peaked in the early 70's.
Most of the rest of South Louisiana were essentially suckerpunched by the 80's oil crunch, the crack epidemic, and the raising of the drinking age to 21 and have never truly recovered.
