Good with AI we aren’t going to need as many people, and most of those not having kids are crazy liberal women who would just be trying to get their kids to change genders.

I've heard people like Peter Zeihan who's a pretty intelligent guy argue that a decrease in population is a bad thing and something to be worried about, but with all the talk about robots and AI taking jobs and things like diminished resources, lower water tables, etc.
seems like a reduced world population would be a good thing?

The current iteration of the “social safety net” absolutely requires the population to grow forever. With that said, we are currently blowing out the national debt regardless, so as long as the population doesn’t crash, I doubt a slow decline would matter all that much.

Inflation is rampant and ridiculous I agree but that’s still ultimately just an excuse. I see plenty of Disney world trips, ski trips, European vacations etc from people in that age group.

People are choosing “comfort” at a level not seen in the past. If you bring another child into the mix yeah you might have to sacrifice a few “fun” things however this was normal life 20 years ago.
People didn’t take yearly Disney trips and travel ball tournaments in Tennessee and cooperstown etc

Give the producers in this country a significant tax rebate (+$15k), and the number of births from desirables would skyrocket.

My wife and I want kids but it’s not gonna happen she has to have a hysterectomy due to issues. We may eventually look into adoption though

I feel like the article should say birth rate, not fertility rate. Those are two very different things

You aint gotta preach to me. I have kids and a stay at home wife. Im doing my part. Its disingenuous to call the cost an excuse though. Somebody with my family in my position 50 years ago would have been considered pretty damn wealthy. Now, Im doing good to be able to support my entire family on my own. A regular blue collar dude just aint gonna do it anymore without living in the hood.

Assisted living centers are filled with residents whose children never ever come to visit. I know because I see it every time I go visit my own mother.
And she's in a really nice facility. Neither wealth nor descendants automatically guarantee you won't age or die alone.

Had third at 38 (wife 36). Was worried when wife said she wanted a third, didn’t want to be too old with kids, etc.

I have three kids who have fortunately all turned out to be productive, normal young adults. I wonder if I had more if I would have been pushing my luck. I thank God they have turned out the way they did.
