I still have my Presidential badges from middle school 
I think, among other things, we had to do 12 pullups. That was the biggest challenge for most. Our PE teacher wouldn't count bullshite pullups either. Hands forward, no rocking the body, all the way down and all the way up, chin over bar.
The mile was cake, as were the sit ups. Can't remember the other things.

We have a long way to go. A pal of mine is an assistant principal in a suburban high school. If your kid wants to play high school sports like hoops, football, or tennis or whatever it's fine.
But, kids these days don't even change clothes for P.E. He told me they wear their school clothes and they do exercises and some activities, but it's not like how it used to be. They are not running track or playing a game of pick-up hoops. They really are not working out and doing strength training or doing aerobic activities. It's basically games and light physical activity which is better than nothing, but no one brings gym clothes and the schools don't provide the shorts and t-shirts and shoes to do that.
You'd have to mandate gym clothes or provide the clothes and shoes, provide the towels and laundry and like the good ole days have the P.E teacher yell at everyone to take a shower. And as we know a good proportion of female P.E teachers are same sex oriented.
You'd have to make them do real hard exercise and physical activity and most parents would rather have their kid take music or another academic class. No one gets into college based on your grades in P.E.
But, as I said kids who play sports in high school are fine. Just do more to encourage sports in intramural, JV, and varsity. Much better way to get kids active.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned here, but every singe PE teacher in my schools growing up also coached something.

Yeah the coaches for the sports did PE. And some of them also taught classes.

But it is good for your brain health, attention span in classrooms, etc. to exercise every day. If parents really wanted their kids to be successful in the classroom, they'd demand physical fitness to an extent.
I don't care how it's done, but my kids will physically exert themselves every day they aren't sick. Wrestling, soccer, basketball, working in the yard, running around the neighborhood, swimming, etc. Who cares, but get your heart rate up.

Auburn had a swimming requirement at one time. I don't know if they still do. I hope so.
PE is not that hard. Kids have energy, and it needs to be burned off, plus they learn a lot about socializing with others and resilience. Give elementary kids a ball and let them play kickball or walk around the field. Their teachers can oversee play time.
