so the football coach can do it, we can do it in bootcamp but suddenly the PE teacher cant?

Late reply sorry but this is an asinine statement. First of all the football coach isn’t coaching 70+ kids by himself, he has position coaches and assistants.

Second of all he has the added benefit that the kids are there by choice, sure the football team is bound to have some shitheads but for the most part the kids chose to be there and generally enjoy the sport so they are way easier to coach. Add to the fact that he has playing time, success, and all other kinds of things to use at his disposal to keep them in line that a regular PE teacher doesn’t, it’s not close to the same

and there are not many 70+ gym classes.

You are 100% wrong on this one sorry

but even if so, you line them up in rows and you get your warm ups done including jumping jacks, your mountain climbers, your pushups, your mountain climbers, then get on your back and do situps or crunchs, flutter kicks, frog pump hip thrust, then stand up and do squats, lunges etc completed aka calisthenics. Exactly as La Sierra did it

And then when 1/2 of them do it wrong and 1/3 of them don’t do it at all what now? PE teachers can’t discipline like they could back in the day, they are barely allowed to give kids a B much less make them run laps or something.

Your post comes off as someone who has no actual experience in any of this, which is the problem. The people making these admin decisions also have no experience in any of it and try things that sound good to them but anyone with any experience would tell you won’t work with the current limitations in place.

I once had a college kid tell me the way to solve teacher pay is to have less teachers and larger classes so you can pay the teachers more. He said a good teacher should be able to teach 50+ middle and high schoolers at once, college professors teach 100’s

this is the part...im not saying do it like it is today. You change this....its real simple...at the end of every 6 weeks they either do 1 of two things

1) meet minimum standards

or

2) they show progress from the last test, if they fail to show progress and have been marked as not participating in class and doing it correctly

they get grades marked off. pretty simple really

standard is the standard and if you fail to meet them their are consequences

im saying there should be 100% admin support on this and tell the parents to frick off.

but why could LaSierra and hundreds of other programs do this in the past but now its impossible to even suggest we actually change to accomplish this?

im not saying that most of the fault doesnt fall with the admin...it does for not backing the coaches, im saying

1) we roll out a national program that has the standards set across the board, exactly what progress is etc

2) we make all schools adopt it or lose funding

3) or get the fed government out of schools period and let each state decide

im good with either or. would actually rather number 3 but whatever

I’m just gonna say, Presidential Fitness Test day was the most boring day of P.E. It was always a major bummer when I walked into the school gym and saw that’s what we were doing that day.. I just wanted to play football/kickball/basketball/etc.

It sounds great but

This is the whole problem, admin are incentivized against doing this today, they’re either afraid to get fired or are just unqualified.

Because they probably had a support system and parent buy in that unfortunately for the most part doesn’t exist anymore. It also probably wasn’t as great as we remember it.

Look, I agree with you on this stuff, it’s important and it matters. I’d love to say it’s as simple as just implementing a program and poof it’s great. It’s just not that simple and I’m explaining to you why, and also why for the most part the coach isn’t the one to blame.

I’m a PE coach.

You won’t even fricking believe how much crap we will get from kids parents when we try to force little Johnny to run the mile. They’ll come out of the woodworks like defense lawyers

I was hoping to hear from a PE coach on this. This is exactly the point of the issue. I would imagine parents and kids have always complained about this stuff. The difference is it used to be administrators telling parents to relax and trust the teacher because they know what they’re doing. Now it’s a game of cover your arse and the administrators default response is just to let the parent/kid get their way to avoid conflict.
