re: To what extent would LSU be more prestigious if it were in a safer location?

LSU grad here, but actively persuaded my kid to go to college out of state. BR crime problems was one of the main reasons. He is a smart kid and got a very good scholarship out of state, but its still more expensive than it would have been had he gone to LSU. Another reason is, since he is smart, going out of state gives him a better shot of not moving back to Louisiana after school. We genuinely want him to live somewhere else besides Louisiana.

I have a 16 year old, and we’re in the same boat. She doesn’t really want to go to LSU, but I’d encourage her to go elsewhere regardless. You get stuck in this area with family, and it’s hard to leave.

This isn’t true lol

It is absolutely true for my son. BR crime, and specifically knowing Tigerland is where the kids hang out.

It's pretty easy to get into LSU. They basically set a new freshman enrollment record every year.

How would that be different from any other year? I'm just saying that there's a noticeable uptick in kids choosing to stay in-state but not at LSU.
Do we have the data that shows this phenomenon is happening at a higher rate this year than years prior or is this just anecdotal evidence?
I have heard from some parents than LSU seemingly isn't recruiting students from the local areas as hard as they have before so that could be a factor. But my kid is far from college age and I'm far removed from college myself so I haven't really kept my finger on the pulse of the situation admittedly. Now I'm kind of genuinely curious.

Also, see NYU and UCLA amomg others
UCLA is in Westwood, sandwiched in between Bel Air, Beverly Hills, and Brentwood.
NYU is in Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan.
Both are in very good areas.

My daughter chose Tech but it had 0 to do with crime rate. To say that she couldn’t get into LSU is simply ridiculous. She likes it there so we’re happy

You know LSU fell off a cliff when graduates of a degree like ChemE might need to consider taking the EIT after the FE to show competency. Like WTF was I learning the past 4 yrs.
What is the difference between EIT and FE?

Don’t you automatically get in LSU if you have a 2.5 or higher in HS?
Depends on what boxes you check.
They still have a 25% rejection rate, but I don't know how many of those rejected did not qualify due to HS GPA or ACT scores.

I don't think it has a major affect, but it has some affect.
I have always thought it was a travesty that LSU did not buy up all of the property around campus over the last 30 years, or at least encourage developers to do so.
There is no reason a flagship school in a capital city should be surrounded by a ghetto.
LSU also has failed to use its political power to cause change in Baton Rouge. There is no entity more powerful than LSU in the city of Baton Rouge. LSU could move mountains if it chose.

I think it has a very low effect on the academics. The problem with LSU is their admission requirements are lower than most SEC schools and they are now invested in diversity over perfromance.

Has more to do with F King. He destroyed LSU's academic ranking.
The two biggest factors in the USNWR rankings are (1) peer assessment (which is purely reputational ie total BS) and (2) four-year graduation rates.
For some reason, it appears that LSU's graduation rate plummeted to 47%. Whether that is because of F. King or some other underlying cause, IDK. But 47% will make you drop, for sure. Obviously, that's fewer students graduating than not graduating. Not great.

That tends to happen when you place a priority on admitting under qualified students who check DEI boxes.

LSU will hold a place in my heart forever, as will it with everyone in my family. My wife and I are both LSU alums, currently live in BR and attend LSU sporting events on the reg. But a growing part of the friends we've all met from our school community are starting to send their kids away from BR as they age into their college years. I've done as much in the interim to explain to my kids what I hope for them in the future, specifically mentioning how I do not want them to grow roots in this city. My wife and I plan to leave here (for the most part) once the kids have all left the nest. With our extended family continuing to remain here, we'll never leave BR "for good" I'd say, but I intend to spend the majority of my time somewhere else if for anything, my own longevity and health.
My oldest is in 7th grade so where I'm at right now, it's really easy to say these things before grappling with the idea of him being in school somewhere out-of-state. Wherever he chooses, hopefully we'll have the means to stay somewhat close. I will do what I can to keep my family unit together through the years and being able to go wherever we need to will help that, barring any financial inabilities.. I will have similar goals for the other kids and making sure we're all able to reconvene at nearby places will be the ultimate achievement.
Louisiana has been very good to us as far as work/family and I'll never forget it. The state, this city, this university, and my local friend base will always be loved. But I gotta get the next generation out of here. It's really turning into a shithole.
Just look around you. Look at the litter, the cars, the violent crime, the roads, the lack of license plates/abundance of temp tags, the increasing lack of police presence, the empty storefronts, the bums, the beggars...
Where can we go? What's on the other side of the rainbow? I dunno, but it's gonna be somewhere other than here.

Louisiana has one of the lowest academic rankings in the country. Who would have thought that a college with most students from that state would not be prestigious.

Let me get this straight. You are saying I am an idiot, as is my son?
I graduated from LSU close to 30 years ago, and then went on to get a doctorate. I have lived in Louisiana my whole life and make well, well into 6 figures. My son got a 31 on the ACT and got a very good scholarship to an out of state, large SEC school. The decision to not go to LSU was motivated by a long term desire (both his and ours) for him to NOT live in Louisiana. He has seen enough to know that other places present a better opportunity, and a better long term quality of life. Also, there is no doubt BR crime affects LSU students, and the ineptitude of the people running BR show that they don't really care. Ask Allie Rice's parents....
I guess if an 18 year old making life decisions based on those kind of metrics makes him (and his parents) an idiot in your mind, then I will take that charge....
