That's possible, but I have noticed a shift in local kids not wanting to go to LSU. Maybe it's just the trendy thing at the moment, but I can tell you a ton of BR kids will be heading to UL and Tech in August.

These are great kids who could get into most state schools and they are actively choosing Lafayette and Ruston. It's definitely a thing, I'm just not sure if it's because it's the cool thing to do or they just don't like LSU.

LSU needs to be encircled by a DMZ in areas not bordered by the river.

A giant moat might do the trick....

Maybe they've been in BR their whole life and want to be further than just down the road from mom and dad for college.

Don’t you automatically get in LSU if you have a 2.5 or higher in HS?

That's definitely true for the majority of kids. Perhaps it's anecdotal but I know a handful of kids who picked Tech or ULL for their well known programs (their engineering schools rank lower but are in roughly the same tier as LSU). I just wanted to see if it was a huge deterrent to LSU getting g those top tier kids. Most of the kids I'm referring to are 3.5+ ACT 25+.

It would be weird having LSU in another state, but yeah, that would help.

Yep. Most kids pick The University of Louisiana since it’s the flagship

Isn’t it basically in Beverly Hills?

UCLA is situated smackdab in the middle of Brentwood, Bel Air and Beverly Hills. USC (went to grad school there) is adjacent to Watts and very close to South Central and Skid Row. Beautiful campus though!

How would that be different from any other year? I'm just saying that there's a noticeable uptick in kids choosing to stay in-state but not at LSU. These are good kids who are actively choosing these smaller schools.

Almost everyone from my high school that went to ULL either didn't get into LSU or had very close family ties to Lafayette.

Tech is a legitimately good school though. It's not as big as LSU, but it's similar in that they have a handful of very competitive programs.

I’m all for shitting on BR for its crime problems, but I don’t think this has had a long term effect on LSU’s (lack of) prestige.

It doesn't. The same posters make the same threads about crime daily. It's concern trolling.

Johns Hopkins, U of Chicago, USC, and Berkeley are all next to far worse neighborhoods than LSU if not actually within shitty neighborhoods. Those are all fantastic institutions that have no issues drawing the best and brightest (or the most connected/wealthy in USC's case).

UPenn used to be in a shite area but it's been very gentrified. There's a huge public housing project right near Yale in New Haven too. U of Maryland isn't an amazing university, but it is pretty competitive and massive in size. And it's very near a sketchy area as well that's on par with LSU's north gates.

What's drawing local kids away from LSU is the university's focus on offering scholarships to out of state kids and letting TOPS handle that for the "in state" kids. LSU's location helps it. It's pretty close to centrally located for the state, and it's near a big enough city so there's a wide variety of affordable(ish) housing.

Hard to say, but I know 3 over the past 4 years who sent their kids to ULL. 2 of the 3 were LSU alum, and to the best of my knowledge none had ties to Lafayette. These were all high performing kids, but I do not know the scholarship situations for any of them.
