Don’t you automatically get in LSU if you have a 2.5 or higher in HS?

Not too long ago you got in if you had a pulse. Now though I'm hearing of kids getting denied or having to interview who would have easily gotten in before. I think Tate is slowly raising the admission standards.

The 80s?

I’m not sure though because I never had to deal with minimum standards.

I was more referring to the F King era. I know of several local kids from good schools with mediocre grades and mid 20s ACT scores that are having to interview or pull strings to get in when they would have easily gotten in say 5 or 6 years ago.

Louisiana has a small talent pool when it comes to smart kids

Not as small as you’d think.

Louisiana’s PSAT cutoff ranking (which ranks the top 1% of test scorers in the state) came in at #27 nationally in 2023. That was above states like Wisconsin, Alabama, Utah, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Vermont.

Our best and brightest stack up favorably to other states.

It’s the bottom half, in particular, that’s the anchor.

Those schools are full of out of state kids now (Alabama 59% & Ole Miss 57% compared to LSU 34%). It's expensive to send ur kid out of state, which means they likely couldn't get into their own flagship school and have the money to go elsewhere. Most of these graduates end up going to Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, etc for work afterwards.

I've met a handful of people who have chosen to send their kids to ULL, Tech, private, or an out of state school because they couldn't afford it or kids were too dumb.

As one poster said.. It's known for athletics.

I don’t disagree.

LSU Athletic’s is iconic.

My point is that is not all that LSU is known for.

From discussions here, it sounds like top 10 in bar fights.

I have heard from some parents than LSU seemingly isn't recruiting students from the local areas as hard as they have before so that could be a factor.

Have good friend who both he and his wife are LSU grads. Ditto for their son and daughter-in-law.
Their grandson was a top student in his high school. The whole family was stunned at how apathetic LSU was when he applied.
He made a trip to Alabama and they basically rolled out the carpet for him.
He just found out that he will be getting even more freebies next year because of his grades and activities involvement.

I don't think it'd be more prestigious, at least at first.

But I do think a nicer town/state would obviously lift it somewhat. It's a nice campus, it seems timeless in part. Sometimes the academic prestige follows other appeal.

SMU was a landing spot for rich kids well before the academic acclaim really caught up to it. I think you could make the argument that LSU would get a few more destination students if you picked it up and put it a nicer place, and in turn, it would see some eventual rise in standards/prestige.

Bama is particularly good at it. They gamed the system to shoot up in rankings and that accompanied the very real appeal of being awesome at football and greek life for a long time. They used those things and manipulation of US News metrics to boost their student profile and pump in money, which in turn is resulting in legit, serious upgrades.

That game has caught up with them and they've slipped back a fair amount, but there are some real improvements that should linger.

UA is pretty much done growing at the undergraduate level. They have now turned to the graduate programs in the push to generate more grant revenue. So far it is working, but I fear they are putting the cart before the horse. At places like Michigan and Texas, they genuinely value research and knowledge generation, and the massive amounts of grant funding they receive are a byproduct of that. At UA, they seem to care about grant funding over all else. They don't give a frick about what faculty research so long as it brings in money.

It is working, but it isn't exactly the most intellectual approach. IDK -- that institution is not for everyone.

LSU is a state run institution in Louisiana. Never had a chance to be anything remotely close to “prestigious.”

I completely agree. While LSU has made some strides in the Nicholson area, for example, BR is still a dump and getting worse in many ways. Go visit a functioning city and then come back home.

Our "leaders" can't even get the roads painted in many areas. You notice a lot of this teaching a teenager to drive. "Okay, now follow the line on the double left turn." "Mom, I don't see a line." All while trying to avoid a crackhead teetering into the street. SMH

In the case if ULL it's a cost thing. Lack of scholarships overall unless you are a sports ball type..

It's not location, or else schools like USC would do badly
