Doesn’t bother me.
The running he is doing probably helps mentally.
When the veteran suicides got as high as they did, there was obviously something else going on.
He probably doesn’t have a “physical” disability.

Some DAV have legit issues, some are scammers. It's well known that there are ways to work the system when you walk away from the military to bump your disability rating.

I hit 100% in May and it took me 15 years to get there.
Bottom line, I started out with a bunch of 0's which meant any worsening would be service connected.
My retirement physical ended with the words; "COL Butch, you are no longer medically qualified for military service." Age 55 with over 35 years active and reserve service, closest I came to getting killed was a 90 minute time gap on 9/11 in the Pentagon.
Started out with a 40% disability with a whole bunch of 0%s. Knowing what I know now, I should have immediately appealed my feet which would have kicked me over the 50% rating where I would not have had the VA payment deducted from my military retirement.
Anyway, a couple of years later, I went to have my 0% knee looked at. Doc takes one look at me and tells me that the money was in my feet. So I filed a second claim on my feet. At that time I got a 30% rating on my feet and a 10% rating on my other knee, taking me to 70%
When the PACT act came in I refiled for my heart. Ended up with a 30% rating which took me to a 90% overall rating.
Then the rough one going from 90 to 100...refiled on my feet as they were really getting bad and on the right arm trifecta (wrist, elbow, and shoulder).
Went to 50 on the feet, 20 on the right shoulder, 10 on the wrist, and 10 on the elbow. Throw in the bilateral factor and I was right at the 95 I needed for ther 100% rating, total and permanent as it was clear there would be no improvement on a 73 year old military retiree veteran.

Maybe dumb question and I have close family members I can ask, but don't veterans get a pension after XXX years of service? Is disability an add on to that?
Or, did many of these folks not do enough years to qualify for a pension and aren't old enough to collect a pension?

Also, I often come across quite a few veterans with "service-related disabilities" who are perfectly fine to walk 18 holes of golf and swing a club violently
I know quite a few of the younger ones who are getting disability for PSTD and are full time employed as well.
Almost all of the guys/gals who were in Iraq and A-stan are getting disability.
Talked to a few, who are full time employed, who tried to tell me how to get it(got out in 1992). Most of those I have talked to never got near combat.

Some are saying they have “PTSD” due to “TDS”. Not kidding.

Don’t necessarily judge them if you haven’t walked in their shoes.
I mean other than being a medic for 8 years and serving in Iraq and Afghanistan for OEF and OIF and literally seeing folks dismembered, charred, burnt and exploded in front of me I'd say I'm qualified.
I'd will always maintain a large of these PTSD claims are folks who didn't do or see absolute shite and only hardship was they didn't have a Starbucks on their base.

Its gone from $20 billion to $150 billion over last 15 years or so.
Like 40% of those enlisted in 2010 get disability checks. It’s fricking welfare.
We were at war/conflict in 2 theaters for 20 years. So yeah let’s fricking complain about the guys who manipulate the system for their benefit.
Never mind that it is still a volunteer service, who once they are in, are held by law to do what they are told.
VA Disability is funded for every single person who enlists. Not every person draws VA disability benefits. Many who do, can hold regular jobs and still have permanent injuries or ailments that will affect their life as they age. Therefore those individuals are compensated based off of a chart.

Mid-20's. Probably doesn't have mental issues either.

I've told this before: when I was I little kid my dad coached the local American Legion baseball team. We'd have to go to BBQ cookouts and other functions. One of the older vets there would say, "There's no bigger bums than VA bums". I had no clue what he was talking about at 7-8 yrs old. I found out as an adult he wasn't wrong.

Cousins kid did 2 in Astan with 2 purples and most probably has some ptsd but refuses to even consider it. Calls all those his age on disability pussys to their face.
Most days he keeps his anger in check and is pretty happy but you wouldn’t want to challenge his to a fight.

There's plenty of great people in the military, but the fact of the matter also is that a lot of the guys that enlist also had nothing much going in life for them. Which frankly, the military is a great place to start being an adult. But also a huge percentage of those guys that had nothing going for them had nothing going for them for a reason, and will continue to have those same reasons for the rest of their life.
So I don't think we should be shocked at all that a huge portion of ex military will try to get all the pay from the government they want.
The problem is you take these benefits away from the leaches and that makes it harder for the guys that do need it to also get it.

Tinnitus for the win...
My daughter's 20yr vet ex claimed Tinnitus for 80% disability to reduce her payments from 2200 to 345 monthly....
He works full time at Delta in HR...

Know of a guy who got indicted for claiming veteran disability from being able to work but also receiving benefits for having a veteran owned business. One required you to tell the government you can’t work and one required you to tell the government you DEFINITELY work and the two government entities did not speak well together so it went on for years.
