Well, Jack Hays was a surveyor... don't think many more were.

Rangers dated back to Austin's colony and prior to that, a tradition in the British Isles. Greatx3 grandfather was a Texas ranger prior to and during the Mexican War and he came to Texas as a kid from Alsace. Many more were just a little more reputable than outlaws... but good on a horse and with a gun.

And it took decades to finally defeat the Comanches (with little thanks to the US government during most of that timeframe).

The Apache says frick you.
—Comanches were much badder than the Apaches. Comanches slaughtered other tribes in Texas

I'm guessing he was the one they called "Devil" Jack Hays. Absolutely no mercy in a fight.

some contaminated blankets
Only one legit account of this being tried. . .and there is no evidence that it even worked.

The Injuns "gifted" the blankets never had any smallpox outbreak. The fort that tried the "gift" was GUTTED by smallpox. . .and was supposedly trying the tactic to get revenge for a brutal massacre the Injuns had perpetrated.

Just an FYI

Yes. Half of the plot line of any western you've ever seen was based on his life. I wish someone would make a miniseries on his life.

Great info, figured a true Texan would clean up my belligerent Cracker Barrel-stylized history. Texas forever.

Some of you in Texas have heard of a ‘Comanche Moon’? It was when they would raid and wipe people out.

Apparently others had a similar, yet substantially stronger, motto.

US military wasn't involved until after Texas became a state. Texas Rangers with single shot long rifles, double barrel shotguns, and surplus Colt Patterson revolvers from the Texian Navy were the most effective opposition from 1836 until McKenzie the US cavalry finally tracked the Comanche to Palo Duro and deprived them of their horses.

Every woman ever abducted by Comanches was brutally raped at a minimum.
