It's kind of crazy how quickly they adapted and became arguably the best horseback warriors in the world.

The other Native American tribes were like "yeah, go over there where the Comanches are. You'll be fine" lol.

Didn't it take innovations in guns to beat the Comanches?

FIFY.

Spain had all sorts of trouble in the early 1800’s. Napoleon overthrowing the monarchy. Civil War. Simon Bolivar liberating South America.

Spain had a happy, murderous run for three centuries in the West. By 1800, this semisphere, Comanches included, had enough of their mierda.

Yes, Texas Rangers were originally land surveyors (turns out it was a very deadly job in Comanche country). They realized really quickly that they needed an adapted weapon to compete with the bowsmanship and horsemanship of the Comanche braves.

Someone else mentioned the SC Gwynne book, which is fantastic, great first hand accounts of some of the norms of fair play in the wild west.

Gwynne makes a great point that Mexico wanted to induce American & Euro immigrants into Texas to act as a human buffer against the Comanche.

If you ever get a chance to see the Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo, do it. Spiritual “home” of the Comanche.

In general, true. But the Comanches were true savages.

That played into it somewhat, but Rangers figured out their battle tactics and eventually overwhelmed them. Comanches were pretty fierce fighters especially on horse. Hanging underneath by the neck and shooting very accurately. Almost like fighting in Afghanistan, the territory knowledge was very advantageous, with most of the warring tribes.

Pablo Duro was the last stand of the Comanche too. Pretty much the last great battle they fought.

Apache Wars book is great reading too, different groups, but very detailed on the South Texas/ARizona, New Mexico wars.

It was more of a story of 1) American settlers allying with other nearby tribes that absolutely hated their guts (Arapaho, Cheyenne, Apache, Kiowa, Wichita, etc.) and 2) sheer demography (and disease) and how outnumbered they were by the 1850's and 1860's.

We’re Comanche the ones who rode the side of horses to remain hidden? If so, what bad arse ingenuity!

Not really. I would've just shot the horse and then the Comanche if he could get out from under the dead horse.

It had to be like encountering a UFO the first time they saw the Spanish galloping over the Texas hill country. Now imagine walking everywhere you’ve ever been and carrying everything you’ll ever know on your person. Gotta remember these people had never seen a wheel, let alone a horse. But, they would have made some great Marines, you wanna talk about adapting & overcoming on the fly..

Seems like all the movies, etc… portrayed the Native American as fit, handsome, with pretty women. Every actual picture of native Americans show them as tremendously unattractive
