From massive numbers, not ability.

If I recall correctly, it was assumed less than 2,000 Comanche braves at any time controlled most of the southern great plains, at that time by far the most desirable buffalo hunting ground in North America... a.k.a. Comancheria.

In general, true. But the Comanches were true savages.

That's what I was thinking after reading Gwynne's book. By the end I was thinking I'd have been firmly in the "eradicate them all" camp.

I mean, they raided a farm, captured the wife/mom of 3 kid and, just for fun, scalped her by cutting just above her ears and around the base of her skull and then peeled her skin/scalp off the top of her head. Left her there for her family to find and she died 3 days later. I can't even imagine.

They have been described as the finest light cavalry in the world. Were the Mongols light cavalry?. Where would the contest be held. In Texas, the Comanche kick butt, central Asia, not sure, what season, equal numbers, one on one, what kind of rules

The Spanish weren't in new Mexican. They were stopped by Mayan tribes deep on south America

The Frontiersman was great. I read it when I was about 15. It contains a very graphic, soul-shuddering scene involving the torturing death of a white army officer at the hands of some natives. I wish I had never read it actually as I still think about it decades later. It forever changed how I viewed American Indians. While atrocities happened on both sides, I then was far more sympathetic to the plight of white settlers.

I thought disease and the near extinction of the buffalo really did the Comanche in.

McCarthy just writes depressing novels with no payoff. Just horrible thing followed by horrible thing followed by horrible thing the end. It’s just not enjoyable to read his book, which is certainly not the case with McMurtry.

I've only read Lonesome Dove but holy hell that was a depressing ending to a book. Not sure how the rest are but I found the ending to Lonesome Dove similar to Cormack books. They both put you in a interesting fantasy world then at the end remind you how brutal life can be

George Armstrong Custer’s blind ambition and arrogance obliterated the 7th Calvary.

Prior to that, The Fetterman Fight in 1866 was the first major defeat on the frontier. If you're a reader, "Ridgeline" by Michael Punke details how Crazy Horse handed the cavalry their first major reality check of life on the prairie.

Her son, Quanah Parker, was the last Comanche war chief. The Comanche birth rate was below replacement level so they bolstered their numbers by adoption or outright kidnapping. It's estimated that up to a third of Comanches were wholly or partly Anglo or Mexican.
