From massive numbers, not ability.
The mongols had damn good abilities

LOOK HERE, MARTIN! SHE'S NOT CYNTHIA ANYMORE! SHE'S COMANCH!

I've got a repro of this revolver,.44 black powder. Beautiful piece despite being somewhat neglected by its prior owner.

The Comanche didn’t play. If you ever want to read a good book on them, check out Empire of the Summer Moon by S. C. Gwynne.

What history book did YOU read?

That’s revisionist history. The people of Mexico speak Spanish not Comanche. In fact no one speaks Comanche because the Europeans wiped them out…easily!

At one point they controlled most of South America, all of Mexico, half the u.s. and some of Canada.
In American movies and books, the Spanish empire is usually relegated to a foil to English or American hero's but their influence is all over this continent.

Were Comanche the ones who rode the side of horses to remain hidden? If so, what bad arse ingenuity!
Really ingenuous! But not as ingenuous as the Apache. I heard tell that, in a shooting war, they would shield themselves by hiding behind rocks and trees. Amazing! These Indians were smart!

For decades the Comanche stopped Gringo western movement at the treeline in eastern Texas. Cynthia Ann Parkers family lived on the edge that resulted in the raid that she and other family members were kidnapped, The Comanche also pushed the apache out of Texas, their long time home. They were truly the "Lords of the Plains".

The Mongols were know to wrap enemy leaders in blankets and stampede horses over them or shove stones down their throat to choke'em.
The Comanche's liked to skin the soles off captive American settlers, then set fire to the praire and have the captives run over the burning prairie to be eventually shot full of arrows. Or, tie'em down on their backs, prop open the eyes with sticks so the sun burned them blind and then eventually eaten alive by coyotes, etc.

Comanches could shoot arrows accurately from under the necks of their horses at a full gallop. I don't care who you are, that's impressive.

This is fresh on my noggin having just listened to Empire of the Summer Moon and Killing Crazy Horse in the last month. Good audio books make a long commute so much more bearable and you can really absorb the material while driving. Much of these books' content overlap and one things for sure.
You ain't lyin. Comanche were the baddest of the bad.
Oh and the Rangers did adopt Comanche tactics and riding skills and improved on them. But as some have mentioned, the repeating rifle ABSOLUTELY played the biggest role in the tides turning in the United States' favor in a much shorter time than it would have otherwise.
Funny sidenote, Custer had these rifles available to him but declined to use them. Had he had these rifles, he may not be nearly as famous as he is.
Little history.net article on what if Custer had chosen to equip his men with repeating rifles.

The picture in the first photo is probably from New Mexico. That's the only place you've got broad flat treeless plains with minor volcanoes in the background.
Where there's more moisture, the small hills are more mesas and buttes.
An advantage to the natives of an area: they knew where the water was and they also knew where the canyons were and how to subtly get to the other side.
