The motorcycle cop killed on Jones Creek...have they said if the truck was at fault?

I couldn’t find any updates on wafb.com. It looks like he was but there are scenarios in which the truck driver may not be at fault. I feel so bad for the family and this incident is stuck in my head.

It’s sad because this same officer was one of the ones shot last year around this time. The Advocate paints the picture as if it’s all the drivers fault and not the officers by using adjectives and descriptions such as the “driver plowed into the officer”. However I heard from one of my friends who is a first responder that the cop was escorting a funeral procession, had stopped at an intersection to hold traffic while the procession passed. Once the entire procession had passed the intersection, he entered the turning lane accelerating in speed to return to the front of the line. In doing so, he collided with another driver who was entering the turning lane to make a left turn.

In Louisiana, you have to yield to every vehicle in a funeral procession. It's hard to hit one of them if you're yielding.
That driver might be fricked. Not as fricked as the cop is, of course. Now, if the cop just slammed into a stopped truck that's different, but if the truck was moving, well...
Either way, if I'm the driver of that truck, I'm lawyering up something fierce because he's gonna need it no matter what happened.
ETA: From what I remember of TFA on the Advocate's website the day it happened, the picture showed the driver's side front quarter panel all crumpled in from the impact like it got hit from the side. How does that happen? Seems like the most likely way would be the truck pulling out in front of the cop.

The Slidell officer that recently passed was escorting a funeral. He was blowing past people in the turning lane, I was there. Someone pulled out and he ran into them on his bike. It cost him his life. All the media said was that he struck by a vehicle while on duty.
I back the blue as much as anyone but at what point do we discuss the hazards of any emergency vehicle ignoring traffic laws for non emergency situations.

Yeah the whole part of the funeral procession is what made me think. Maybe the motorcyclist made some unorthodox move that a normal driver would not expect.

Sometimes these motorcycle cops drive like complete dickheads during funeral processions.
I know. Too soon. And really I do feel for his family but I could totally see him just whipping out in front of someone.

I’m not sure drive like dickheads is the right way to put it, but part of the reason they use motorcycles is their ability to accelerate and have better maneuverability. I absolutely agree that allows them some liberties that also makes it very dangerous.
If I had to guess, and this is pure assumption, is that the funeral procession had passed and the cop was at the very end holding an intersection. The truck thought the procession was over and turned out not noticing the bike going at high speed to get back to the front.
Not sure what the answer is, maybe have a cop car that stays at the very end behind the bikes? There’s no great way to do it that’s safe.

There was a large gap in the procession and driver was coming from a driveway. Also, from what I’m told he moved vehicle 3’ back so he was going at a pretty good clip.

They fly around doing escorts and doing it in traffic leaves very very little room for error by the Police or motorist.

Since it's all speculation at this point I think the truck turned left thinking he is going to beat this line of cars. Didn't see bike racing up the left lane. Truck driver probably looking right when he was going to clear the line of cars. I agree bike hit the truck.

The local police here stopped escorting funerals because of how dangerous it is. It's worse for motorcycles. Probably shouldn't use them.

If they are going to use them then there should be enough on duty so they don't have to drive like maniacs to rush ahead to the next redlight.

It was a crash. Both or one was at fault. Accidents don't happen as often as people think. It's people's shitty driving that causes crashes. This was avoidable.
