The Deadly Rise of Giant Trucks and SUV's
Posted on 6/22/26 at 8:56 am

In the early 2000s, more than half of the passenger vehicles on American roads were traditional cars like sedans. Their hoods were low to the ground.
By the 2010s, larger vehicles like compact S.U.V.s had eclipsed cars.
Today, S.U.V.s and pickup trucks dominate the roads. Many are bigger than ever.
And far deadlier, a New York Times investigation found.
They are killing thousands of pedestrians who otherwise might have survived.

Is it deadly to the person driving it?

Exactly.
I have a big ride because I want to live and every other vehicle out there is huge. Couldn’t pay me to drive some little car.

I saw where Lexus no longer is making the LS sedan and it gave me the sads. That was going to be my retirement present to my bride.

Why didn't they compare new trucks to older trucks and not small sedans and suvs, or new Sedans to older sedans.
It's a hit piece on pick up trucks...
Compare the newer sedans to this...

Yeah, that sounds about right, blame the cars, not the drivers.

Are they just not selling it in the US anymore or are they stopping production overall?

Maybe they should stay out of the road?
Just a hypothesis.

You'll get a lot of downvotes, but probably the biggest offenders of highway tailgating are from jacked up trucks

Insecure pavement princess (Giant Trucks) owners and hating pedestrians and cyclists. Name a better duo.

I think it's just us.

Patrick Scheelen, Senior Manager of Lexus Product Communications for Europe, confirmed: “There is no intention for LS discontinuation globally.” Leigh Anne Sessions, Senior Manager of Lexus Communications North America, declared: “In Japan, the word flagship means that it is a core model for the brand, and the ES fits this description, as it was launched at the same time as the LS and is one of our best-selling models globally. We do not have any LS news to share at this time.”

They should grade the driving test on a letter scale.
F - current fail. Get a bike. Not an e-bike.
D - current pass. Can drive a moped or a golf cart.
C - Target top 50% of current drivers. Can drive a sedan.
B - Target top 20% of current drivers. Can drive a truck/SUV.
A - Target top 10% of current drivers. Can drive 18-wheeler.
If you get caught driving above your allowed vehicle, you are summarily executed with your corpse left on the side of the road as a warning to others.

Or learn that the thick white lines in the middle of the road designate an appropriate place to cross

bullshite, I’m like
I got that real good, feel good stuff
Up under the seat of my big black jacked up truck
Rollin' on thirty-fives
Pretty girl by my side
You got that sun tan skirt and boots
Waitin' on you to look my way and scoot
Your little hot self over here
Girl, hand me another beer, yeah

Or possibly the dumbass pedestrians. Have been seeing a lot more pedestrians walking on the shoulders, or in the street, when there is an available sidewalk for them to use. Then there are the folks that think they can walk and text/scroll that will step too far into the street when walking up to intersections.
And with the rise of escooters/ebikes, it will only get worse with all of the people that think it's ok to drive those things as fast as they can and believe the traffic laws do not apply to them because they aren't in cars

We were in a wreck with a drunk driver in 2015. Luckily I was driving my full size truck. If we had been in our car, we would have died.
