So the issue is you want a discount for you to agree to a 3 year contract?
While reasonable to ask, you’re not entitled to one. Doesn’t mean it’s a scam. Switch carriers if you don’t like it.
Loyalty? There’s none any longer today unfortunately. Corporations don’t have relationships.

I hate having to buy a new phone and the ever increasing costs.
But to play devils advocate, considering the number of functions it provides and the amount the average person uses and relies on it, the price isn’t as outrageous.
I’m not sure how to quantify that on a use per dollar type level, but it’d still look pretty cheap.

Finally have to bite the bullet and get a new phone, nothing wrong with my MILSPEC phone other than they obsoleted it be design. Of course I'm due for an upgrade, they give me the oh yeah you can get a new phone for 3 years of payments. I say I just wanna buy the phone what’s the upgrade discount. - oh you can’t do that "the upgrade is we let you finance a phone for 36 months”
If I were dictator I would smash this industry into a million pieces.
I've gotten my last two phone upgrades for free through Verizon. I can go upgrade S26 for free today if I want. I'll keep my S21 a while longer. I hate changing phones.

I had no real interest in upgrading to the 18 Pro, but ATT ran a "no matter what condition, $1,200 trade in value for any iphone series 14 or newer". Considering I had a 14 Pro, and presumably next year the offer would be for series 15 or newer, it seemed to behoove me to go ahead and pull the trigger now

You realize you didn’t really get it “for free”?
Posted on 10/30/26 at 1:13 pm to Strannix
I usually keep my phone 4-5 years. Just got the 17 pro max. $1100/$37 a month, no interest. Not a bad deal for a computer in my pocket that I use for work and entertainment every single day of my life.

I traded in my 14 Pro worth about $200 for $1,200 in value towards a new phone and the only "catch" is that I get that $1,200 at a rate of $33 per month, and I stop getting it if I leave ATT. While not utterly free, that's a pretty solid ROI, in my opinion.

Cause I’ve been a loyal AT&T customer For 20 years with no reason to change, 4 lines. That’s why

It's been like that. But I find the best deal is to get the outgoing flagship right before the new model comes out.

Yeah, I did. The payment for the phone was on my monthly bill, but there was a also credit to cover it and cancel it out.
I made sure of all that..

So you’re annoyed they’re not agreeing to give you free money?

The s5 and s7 active were my favorites. Batteries you could change. IR blaster. Headphone jack.
Hate that we are forced to update then they start to crash. On the s25+ now.

Swappa.com
Buy used unlocked for cheap. They can't list phones the screens are jacked up. They all have to be approved to be posted.

I traded in about a month ago and had a similar experience.
For most of the past 15 years, the free phones were cheap. Maybe $300-$400 retail.
I had some British version of a galaxy 3 or 4 years ago.
When I went in to look at new phones, they were $800-$900 and my credit was $800 from the P.O.S. british galaxy a50.
I've got an S26 for nothing. I just had to give up my A50 and upgrade my line $10 (after getting the new phone, I drop the upgrade on my account. Keeping the upgrade is not required for some reason).
Giving away the cheap $300 phones made sense.
I haven't made heads or tails of this new strategy yet.

I am too young to remember, but back in the day this would set you back a mint.
It was even more expensive in the mid 1980’s.
This was when calling someone on a cellphone meant you had something important to tell them.
When Nextel started the push to talk trend and everyone heard your business as you were shopping in Walmart having a conversation on your speaker phone.
Now we can see each other on FaceTime.

At 0% interest for 36 months in which I am forgiven 1/36th of the value every month for doing absolutely nothing. But sure, “financed”
