The cash price is jacked up so high that it is more expensive than "financing" it

For 20 years with no reason to change, 4 lines. That’s why
You already get a multi-line discount for having four lines. They are functionally willing to give you a free phone if you stay another three years. And considering that's not even locking you into a contract, I'm not sure I understand the objection.

I haven't financed a phone in a few upgrades. I just buy refurbished on Amazon. Honestly, as long as the screen is clear and the camera is quality, I don't care about how new it is.

I haven’t purchased a new phone in 10+ years. Wife gets the latest and greatest every two years from her work, they don’t ask for it back, and I use it for the next two years. Rinse and repeat.
I never get a new phone, but never use one that’s more than 4 years old.

You can buy a phone basically anywhere now and port over painlessly.
If it's esim, you don't even have to tell your current carrier

S8 Active - TANK.
That phone in a case is damn near indestructible. I had it before I got this one and only gave it up because the battery wouldn't hold a charge and apps no longer work on it.
Still rocking my S8
The only drawback is its 64GB storage and I just got a notice that Android Auto wouldn't support it anymore, but I haven't noticed anything yet.

Buy an unlocked phone from Amazon or a refurb from Woot.
I use phones that are 3-5 years behind. They do absolutely everything I can need them to. What are new phones doing that's so great in the last 3 years?

Can't stand to buy new phones. Wish we could go back to telephone booths.
Much more reliable.

AT&T is about the least loyal company to it's customers you could find.

I have never had a problem just buying a phone in one payment
Me either until I broke mine on a trip and had to go to at&t store. They would only let me pay $400 cash towards the phone and the rest was monthly payments.
Normally i just buy one off the internet and put my sim card in
